Submitted August 20, 2008 - 3:26 pm by Chris (not verified)The diarist brought up the old GW Bush electoral tactic of picking three issues where the opponent is weak, and hit those themes relentlessly as a campaign (shades of "its the economy, stupid"). Bush ran in 2000 on tax cuts, NCLB, and the prescription drug plan. Taking two traditionally Democratic issues-education and health care-helped him sell his whole "compassionate conservative" schtick, much in the way Clinton pitched welfare reform and deficit reduction along with health care in '92 to sell his "new democrat" image.
I think the Obama campaign has got some good individual messages out there, and some good ads, but hasn't yet put together a good theme to tie everything together, IMO. The convention would obviously be the best time to present that, when you have a lot of eyeballs on you.
