Narcoterrorism and the Zetas
Submitted September 27, 2008 - 9:45 am by E Bryant Holman (not verified)Although I was unable to find the article I was looking for on Isabel Arvide's website (it may have been removed), I do remember distinctly reading a note written by her last year wherein she discribed an incident in Jalisco wherein narcoterrorists threw a grenade or a bomb into a cockfighting arena and injured around 50 people, many of them critically, and killed several. So, this event in Morelia was not, exactly, a first. Arvide placed the blame on the Zetas, and she made the startling claim that the Zetas were not some renegade group operating outside of the Mexican Army, but, rather, they are part of the drug cartel of the Mexican generals who are in the drug trade (which is sometimes referred to as the Cartel of Chiapas). According to Arvide, the Jalisco state police were quite intent on capturing the perpetrators, but they escaped the dragnet by going to a nearby military base, from whence they were smuggled out of the state in military vehicles.
Even though I don't think this article is on her website anymore - for what reason I can't imagine - maybe they pressured her - she has a lot of other articles about the Zetas and their connection with the active military and their role in drug trafficking and narcoterror which are worth consulting. She is one of the most fearless journalists in Mexico.
Kristen Bicker invited me to comment on this article here, after a note I published on the e-group list "1zapatsita" alluded to this report of Arvide's.
