This is
Submitted on November 30th, 2009 by Juventino (not verified)a nice gesture, but can it really be pulled off when the majority of the middle class in Mexico are so fearful of losing what little they think they have gained since PAN took power?
What Middle Class?
Submitted on November 30th, 2009 by Al GiordanoJuventino - Most of the Mexican "middle class" was destroyed in the devaluation of the peso and crisis of December 1994. Since then, it has had a much smaller middle class than most other countries, per capita. To the extent there is a professional (white collar office worker) class in Mexico, most of it is hurting economically, and the largest haven for them is in the Federal District, where they dutifully vote again and again against the Calderón-PAN project.
In that, they are allied with the great majority of Mexicans.
I think that the economic caste you refer to as middle class is way too small to have the numbers to block meaningful organizing from change from below.
Middle Class
Submitted on December 1st, 2009 by Juventino (not verified)From my experience living in Monterrey, the third largest city in Mexico, there is a huge middle class that still lives there. These are the people who work for corporations like Famosa, for example, who are given a multitude of benefits easily comparable to what people used to have in the States.
During the 2006 election, many of these people were in fear of Obrador as they envisioned him "giving" to the poor and making them pay for the programs like IMS which they did not use since, for example, Famosa employees had their own clinics that provided health care to them. Of course, this was primarily the licensados and not the blue collar workers who still recieved terribly low wages, albeit with "benefits".
Of course, Monterrey is not the typical Mexican city, but I felt as though there was enough influence to determine the vote. OF course what really happened during that election is another issue--corruption was no doubt a factor, but so many of these PAN people were convinced, much like in this country, where people will refuse (or wish to refuse) to pay for health services of those who they feel do not contribute to the government, that Obrador was a Chavez like leader who would cost them what little they had.
MY own in laws are PAN and my wife voted for Calderon, though I insisted he was going to do even more harm than Fox. Her brother was heavily involved in PAN in Mty. and of course her family voted that way.
Either way, if you are correct about the middle class currently being allied with the rest of Mexicans, I wish them the best of luck since Calderon is most assuredly a lackey for American corporate interests and policies.
