Re: Costa Rican Supreme Court Temporarily Halts Entry of U.S. mi
Submitted on July 28th, 2010 by Ethan Allen (not verified)As a U.S. citizen and absentee Costa Rican property owner, I especially stand opposed to any establishment of U.S. military bases in Costa Rica, and would further advocate for the ceasing of any U.S. military operations, including the U.S. Coast Guard, within Costa Rican national waters; regardless of the supposed purpose.
While I completely appreciate the excellent reporting and advocacy of Narco News, and have referenced your information in many personal correspondences and discussions, I must constructively object to the deceptive language used in the title of this missive. The Costa Rican Supreme Court has "Halt(ed)" nothing, they have merely accepted a legal challenge to the legislation; and as the body of your article accurately states, has yet to decide rather the Legislature has exceeded its authority under the Constitution.
Upon having read the synopsis of the article, as offered in your eMail, I was, as you might imagine, especially interested in following the "read more" option. That is when I discovered the paragraph describing the actual and current status of the instant issue before the court.
As a matter of advocacy and opinion I may well be even more strident in my opposition to our government's colonialist policies and actions in South and Central America, which date, in many instances, from our founding; and as the article mentioned, manifested itself recently during the Honduran coup and the increase in military presence in Colombia. My above concern has to do with a strongly held personal view that if Progressive journalism is to become accepted as a viable alternative to the so-called "main stream", it can not resort to sensationalist rhetoric or blur the lines between factual reporting and editorial opinion; this is the very fringe extremist jingoism that has earned the established media its current disdain.
Thank you for your commitment, and all the good work you do!
