the tone of this article...

Sarcasm and ridicule are weapons
Submitted on October 8th, 2009 by Al GiordanoNick - There are many different styles of writing. If you don't like one kind, borrow the same facts and write your own.
Ridicule and sarcasm are two of the best weapons that people without wealth and traditional armament have to strip away the illusory power of those above. I personally find 90 percent of standard "activist-speak" writing too boring to hold the attention of many readers. There are those who said that Twain, or Fallaci, or Vidal or Dorothy Parker were too sarcastic, too. Not everybody digs everybody else's style. But like most of the indigenous I've lived and worked alongside with, I find it futile to argue about matters of taste. You don't like someone else's style? Then develop and use your own!
Being the publisher here I hear from all kinds of people about all our writers; what they like or don't like about their styles. And a lot of folks - in Spanish and English - have communicated that Fernández's style is refreshing to them in its complete disdain for the hypocrisies of hypocrites, in its savage sense of humor, in how it denies the self-important players she writes about the deference that they depend on to maintain themselves on top. No writer's style - not mine, not yours - is everybody's cup of tea. So what? Each of us has the access and the power to, instead of bitching about other people's styles, do it ourselves exactly as we think it should be done.
Lead by example, not from the peanut gallery.
Call it what you like, it's good
Submitted on October 9th, 2009 by Kenneth KelleyWhile everyone is entitled to their opinion, I have to second your comment Al. Call it sarcasm, irony, wit or just damn good, I find Belen's unique style of writing to be informative, entertaining, and outstanding journalism.
As to whether it makes it "hard to read" sometimes I find myself reading very carefully, to catch the subtle ironies in her work. Nothing wrong with reading slowly.
Besides the facts, her stories gives us an insightful look at the many faces in this saga; whether it's Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen, her Honduran counterpart Silvia Ayala, or as importantly, lesser known voices, like the banana workers union on the coast.
The work both of you have done down there, has served as the eyes and ears of those of us in "el Norte", as we have try to see through the smokescreen of the golpistas' PR hacks, and pandering politicians in DC, to learn about the brave struggle of the Honudran people.
