AP writer ventures into libel land

From Ms. Rebeca Romero’s published libelous comments:

Kind colleagues, I expose to you the following case: In Oaxaca there is a group of foreign activists that have dedicated themselves to harass and discredit me. They are part of the “Narco News Bulletin” project, and collaborate for Indymedia, and work as reporters and come into Mexico on tourist visas. I wouldn’t bother them if this were just gossip, but they have already moved from slanders to aggressions and intimidations.

In reaction to Ms. Romero’s published comments, I wish to wage a formal protest with the Associated Press and her individually concerning this libel of my character. I have been a correspondent for Narco News since 2004 and have never engaged in any actions to “harass and discredit” Ms. Romero.

Ms. Romero has never met me, nor have I ever penned her name until this moment, and I have never entered Mexico on a tourist visa, but through her libelous accusation, she accuses me, due to my role as a correspondent with Narco News, of “aggressions” and “intimidations” against her and by direct result has maliciously commited libel by publication.

I hope that Ms. Romero is not speaking for the Associated Press in making these incendiary accusations, and I would expect the AP to promptly disavow any relationship with Ms. Romero or participation in her libelous smear campaign.

Our Policy on Comment Submissions: Co-publishers of Narco News (which includes The Narcosphere and The Field) may post comments without moderation. All co-publishers comment under their real name, have contributed resources or volunteer labor to this project, have filled out this application and agreed to some simple guidelines about commenting.

Narco News has recently opened its comments section for submissions to moderated comments (that’s this box, here) by everybody else. More than 95 percent of all submitted comments are typically approved, because they are on-topic, coherent, don’t spread false claims or rumors, don’t gratuitously insult other commenters, and don’t engage in commerce, spam or otherwise hijack the thread. Narco News reserves the right to reject any comment for any reason, so, especially if you choose to comment anonymously, the burden is on you to make your comment interesting and relevant. That said, as you can see, hundreds of comments are approved each week here. Good luck in your comment submission!
