¡Narcoesfera bilingüe!
As I wrote a short time ago here, getting this site fully bilingual (and eventually trilingual) is the next major goal for the Narcosphere. We've taken the first real step in that direction today. Scroll down for English

The Narcosphere interface that is, all the menus and other texts of the scoop software that runs this site is now available in both English and Spanish. You will probably notice several stray pieces that are still English; hopefully by the end of the weekend those will all be in place. Those of you who speak Spanish as your first language may also find some rough spots in the translation. Most of it was done with the help of native Spanish-speakers that work with Narco News but I'm sure there is some room for improvement.
Those of you logged in with copublishers' accounts can switch the interface language by clicking on Display Preferences, in the menu that appears just under your name on the right-hand side of the screen. If you do not have an account, the site will try to guess your language from your browser settings. There is also an item in the top menu on the right-hand side that will let you switch languages manually.
The next step will be dealing with the actual content of the site. This going to be much more complicated. As it is now, you can switch the interface language, but that doesn't mean that the notebook entries or comments will look any different. First, I think I'm going to add a way to classify content as being either English or Spanish before posting it, and give users a few options for filtering what they read. But beyond that, the idea is to build is a system where any copublisher who thinks the content is interesting enough to volunteer their labor can easily translate both notebook entries and comments by other copublishers. Perhaps this could include a rating system for translations, similar to that which we have for rating comments.
I don't know of any interactive websites that have a system like this in place, so this process is exciting, if a little overwhelming. Please, contact me at webmaster@narconews.com or post comments to this thread with questions and ideas on these issues.

El Salvador blackmail
Submitted on March 29th, 2004 by Jeff WegersonThroughout the Salvadoran campaign, the ruling right-of-center ARENA party claimed that if hard-line leftist candidate Shafick Handal of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) won, there would be a rift in Salvadoran-U.S. relations. That, ARENA officials claimed, would result in massive deportations of the 2.3 million Salvadorans in the United States and in a disruption in the estimated $2.2 billion a year they send home.

I would love to post an extended version of this with links and attributions, but I'll be damned If I know how. The site is stagnant at the moment and I'd be glad to do my small part.
How do I submit a new story for consideration for promotion?

Long comments
Submitted on March 31st, 2004 by Andrew Grice (not verified)I don't think there is any length limit to comment posting. I just tried pasting in a very long piece and it previewed fine, so I'm assuming it would also post fine. As for the center column, I guess anyone with a reporters notebook could "promote" a comment by putting up a new notebook entry with that comment pasted into it. Naturally, they should clearly indicate that someone else was the author of that piece, but that's simple enough.
