Bushland
This was something I wrote and posted in my diary at the Agonist. Actually though, I did this for a Mexican photojournalist by the name of Julian Cardona to try to give people a glimpse at the hometown of George W. and how his background influences the foreign policy of our country. Drugs are just a small part of a much larger problem.
One of the most embarrassing things I have to do in this day and time is to admit that I share anything in common with George W. Bush. But I do.
I spend a lot of time issuing disclaimers about bushabout how hes really a cold-hearted blue-blood Yankee wrapped in a Texas hide. And about how no God-fearing Texan could possibly be that bad. While there is some truth to that, the fact remains that my compatriots overwhelmingly voted for him, and do share a lot of his views. I cant begin to describe how much it hurts to say thatto know that my homeland has produced such a man. And continues to support him despite the daily proof he offers to suggest he is an incompetent elitist with little or no compassion for those of different persuasion.
When he speaks, it is with the thick accent I also have. His hat looks a whole lot like mine. We both tend to be cockythis trait seems to come with the territory. He gets in your face with his beliefs and tends to say what is on his mind. He is a vain man and works hard to maintain his image. He is willfully ignorantnothing that wasnt thought up by him or another Texan is worth knowing anyhow. Didnt you know everything we have in Texas is the biggest and the best? And thats a fact.
Unlike Dubya, (he was born a Yankee), I was born in Midland, Texas in the year 1957, which makes me a number of years younger than he. But we went to the same junior highSan Jacinto Junior High School, and I suspect there wasnt a hell of a lot of difference between the people I grew up with and his crowd, aside from the fact that I avoided hanging out with the rich white privileged group from which he was spawned. They wouldnt have me anyway. Class and social status was always a big thing in Midland. And if you didnt live in the right neighborhood, you didnt belong. (I did live on the fringe of their territory, but ours was new moneyI didnt quite know how to wear it.)
We both profess belief in God and Jesus. I have seen the all-white church crowd with which he attended Sunday-go-to-meetings, although recent years has made it increasingly more difficult for me to stomach their company. I have worked the oil fields for others like bush, used the same drugs, gotten drunk on the same booze, and chased the same wild women.
Yes, even Sunday-go-to-meeting types tend to chase whores every once in a while in West Texas. But of course they admit that only in the company of chosen others like themselves; in the presence of their wives, girl friends and most preachers they swear to God theyd never do such things. Id be willing to bet over half of Midlands men know exactly where and what boys town is on a personal level.
When I once told a friend that I had confessed to my wife about an encounter with another woman he told me, Are you crazy? If my wife caught me naked on top of another woman Id jump up and ask, Are you going to believe me or those lying eyes of yours? A person in bushs crowd will not get caught whoring around, and if caught, will deny it to the grave.
Truth be knownthe reason people like bush so hate the Bill Clintons of the world is that now that they live in a position of constant exposure, they can no longer get away with bedding those nimble young morsels they so desire. I know.
At least there are a few Condoleezzas in the world to fill the void. Or jacking off. But these are a poor substitute for a wild ride with an uninhibited Texas whore after snorting a big ole line of cocaine.
And, by God, if I cant do it, nobody can.

In order to understand Midland, you must also take a look at Odessa. For in this part of West Texas, it wasnt good enough to put the undesirables across the railroad tracksanother town was requiredsome twenty miles to the west.
Midland, Texas lies in a vast flat, barren stretch of West Texas that looks like the floor of an ocean without any water. It rarely rainsthe average is somewhere in the vicinity of ten inches a year and most of that might come on a few days, accompanied by violent winds and large hail stones. Dry dust storms are more common than rainthe sky turns red with the approach of strong winds billowing out of the Northern plains and off of the Rocky mountains far to the west; the winds generate speed as they travel over plowed cotton fields of the Panhandle of Texas where they rip soil from the earth. The cloud of dust comes with a rush and engulfs the town; residents flee to their homes and cars and huddle indoors until it passes.
In the rich neighborhoods of Midland, tiff grass lawns grow like the greens of a golf course under sprinkler systems that come on automatically each day, providing massive amounts of very precious and expensive water for the yards. A big open sky provides the sunlight; generous amount of fertilizers and chemicals are spread without regard to cost. Every blade of grass is manicured to perfection by a reel-type mowertraditional lawn mowers wont cut such thick fine grass to the specifications required to be part of the elite in Midland. And of course, the man on or behind that mower is never the owner of the yard, but always someone of a darker hueeither brown or black. And the woman that cleans the house, makes the beds, does the laundry, and washes the dishes, necessarily is the wife or the daughter of that lawn manif not that of the garbage collector.
For that reason a certain number of Mexicans and Negroes are tolerated in Midlandsomeone has to do the menial labor and it aint gonna us rich white folks. That, and the need for good football players. It is a plain and simple fact that niggers can run faster and jump higher than most white boys.
Of course someone like bush no longer says nigger unless hes among his ownthat same crowd that shares in the hiding of his secret exploits. I have always found it remarkable to compare and contrast the conversations of my people while in the presence of other elite white male co-conspirators and what they say in public or in front of a woman or a member of a minority race. No woman like Mrs. Bush will tolerate such a word in her housethat language will get a young boys mouth washed out with soap right quick in the home of a rich white Midlander. But Mrs. Bush and her type wouldnt even dream of living next door to a Negro. No way in hell.
These dark skinned people have their own sections of town: Nigger town, (colored town, for Mrs. Bush), and the Mexican barrio. A railroad track separates the communities. Blacks or Mexicans had better not get caught driving around in the rich white neighborhoods after dark, or for that matter during the day if they dont have a lawn mower on that trailer behind that old truck they drive. Midland cops know well who belongs where in this town. And they are watching.
We have co-opted the things we liked from their cultures and made them our own. Barbecue and good music from the blacks, enchiladas, tacos, and a few tricks with horses and cattle from the Mexicans.
Summers are brutally hot in Midland, but the rich seldom suffermassive central air units keep temperatures inside a steady 70 degrees year round. All cars are equipped with air conditioners. People go from house to office, mall, or grocery store, and in each of these places the air is cool and clean. Even gyms are air-conditioned and the rich work out with barely enough clothing to cover the hard-earned physiques they sport, but not less than would be considered socially acceptable. I have seen a hint of just about every body part there is to see in such a placea man like me or George W. would find it hard not to.
On occasion though, braving the elements is requiredwe still havent figured out how to enclose or air condition golf courses yetbut golfers do ride from shot to shot in golf carts and spend as little time as possible out in the sun hitting the balls. And for the ultra-tough of the elite, riding a polo pony may be required on occasion. Of course the pony is trained, fed and exercised by a Mexican, who even saddles the horse and legs up the rider so he can showcase his stuff to admiring onlookers.
Afterward, the polo player lounges under a shade drinking ice-laden beverages and revisiting his exploits on the field. And all the women in the flowery dresses and fancy hats shine for their man while they recite the latest gossip.
Many miles separate Midland from any body of water of decent size, but that doesnt stop the rich from having a boat and a new pick-up or a Suburban to pull that boat. You aint shit if you dont have a boat. And maybe a ranch with a herd of cattle and some horses, but not just any horse. They must be registered and worth a lot of money. We like Quarter horses.
The water in Midland is hard and contains too much fluoride; so all rich and even middle class folks buy drinking water. Those who drink tap water throughout their youth develop extremely hard and ultra-white teeth with faint brown spots from the excess fluoride. I can spot a poor person raised in that region of Texas just by looking at his or her teeth.
Were it not for black gold underground, Midland and Odessa would be nothing more than a few gas stations to provide fuel for cars traveling through the West Texas desert expanses. But Midland/Odessa rests above a very large reservoir of oil known as the Permian basin. Pump jacks surround the sister cities in every direction; as a kid I always thought of them as big rocking horses, until I got close to one and realized how large they are. Each stroke of these pumps lifts precious crude, or nasty black oil, depending on how you look at it, to numerous tanks or pipelines that crisscross the earth, both above and below ground. The oil goes to refineries and is turned into gasoline to fuel our nation. The wells also produce natural gas, which is gathered and funneled into larger pipelines that carry the gas to heat cities and fuel electric plants.
Most refineries sit in remote parts of the surrounding desert. They look like some artists rendition of hell, with twisted pipes and assorted receptacles; fires flare gas and smoke and steam belch from tall smokestacks. A sulfurous smell taints the air, but to those around Midland this is something they have learned to tolerateto them it is the smell of money. Lots of money. Enough money that at one time Midland had more millionaires per capita than any city in the United States.
People from Midland own the oil fields; those who live in Odessa and a few more small neighboring towns drill the wells, service the machinery and keep the oil flowing. (In this part of the world a neighboring town may be many miles away.) Oilfield work is heavy and dangerous and exposes workers to all the elements. Activity never stops, day or night, regardless of the weather.
When I worked as a roughneck, we got off one day a yearChristmasand if you didnt show up for work without sending a replacement, you were fired. Wells sometimes blew out, incinerating people when they did. Moving extremely heavy equipment strained cables to the breaking point; the slightest miscalculation could crush the life out of a body. Rare was the seasoned roughneck with all fingers intact. But it was never a rich white citizen that suffered or died from these mistakes.
We were rather well paid. Now, a lot of the roughnecks are Mexican nationals and the pay is not near so good.
Midland has a large white-collar communityall the geologists, engineers, and oilfield executives and their pretty secretaries live there. Being pretty tends to be required of secretaries in Midland, and the ones that really do well learn a few tricks not officially taught in school. Plastic surgeons selling fake tits also do well in Midland. Most residents are either rich or a servant of the rich and poorthose aforementioned types that cut the lawns, clean the houses, man convenience stores, clean motel rooms, and provide other basic services for the wealthy. That is not to say a middle class doesnt existits just proportionally much smaller than that of Odessa.
Odessa on the other hand is mostly a blue-collar middle class town with a bunch of rough hard-working folksthose who actually get the oil out of the ground and turn it into useable products. As a rule, oilfield workers tend to be a salty lot; they like to fight, fornicate, and drink; recent years has seen the addition of other drugs to make the fighting, fornicating, and drinking more enjoyable.
Dont get me wrongthe people from Midland also like to take in such activities, especially the latter two, but not in their town. There are no tit bars in Midland, so Odessa supplies double the normal amount to support the excess need Midlands deficit generates (which must be doubled again to take into account all the roughnecks and oilfield workers). Each city is home to around a hundred thousand people.
A trip to a tit-bar in Odessa reveals lots of good looking women ready to do just about whatever you want or need, assuming you have plenty of cash on hand. Prostitution is illegal, but that never stopped anything. You want sex? You can buy it in Odessa. Drugs also. But you better stay the hell out of Midland with that stuff.
However, unlike many other cities in Texas, queers arent well tolerated around Midland and Odessa. You know the Bible prescribes the death penalty for queers, dont you? And all abortions are an act of murder. (A young white girl needing such a service most probably will need to take a short vacation in a place like perhaps, Austin.)
Football is a religion in West Texas. The only reason Midland has other sports is because they are required to by law, and they have to give the girls something to do, but the only one that really matters to anyone is football. Nearly every year at least one team from these two cities will advance far into the state play-offs; between Midland Lee and Odessa Permian, quite a number of state champion teams have been produced. Each game fills a large stadiumif you ever happen to drive through West Texas on a Friday night in the fall of the year, the glaring lights of football stadiums illuminate the countryside for miles around. And whole communities are out supporting their team.
People get serious about their football in West Texas. Kind of reminds me of practice for future wars. I can almost picture young Dubyathe cheerleaderadmonishing his Negroes to throw themselves into the other team with reckless abandon. Only now the football field has become Iraq. And instead of throwing footballs, the players hurtle real bombs and bullets at each other. And George aint about to go face this enemy any more than he was those bad-ass boys from Odessa Permianthe sons of his dads employeeswho would gladly have broken his bones and kicked his puny white ass, given the opportunity.
Midlands Jesus is at least six feet tall with light brown hair and blue eyes. He is always cleaneven when hes getting crucifiedand his long hair is always freshly washed and brushed. He has a halo above his head. And those who follow him are guaranteed success in whatever they do. You want money? A good job? A pretty wife? Better listen to Jesus. Cause he has all these things and he doesnt mind sharing with those who believe. It has been reported that he will give back at least tenfold to those who donate to the collection plateif not a hundredfold. Hard to get a hundredfold return on your money anywhere else. And it works. I have seen it with my own eyes.
But Midlands Jesus dont like evildoers. No siree. Them damned Moslems and the like need to be done away with. Turn Iraq to glass if need be (all the oil is underground anyway). And if a few innocents get caught in the onslaughtwell sometimes a price has to be paid for freedomand were just sending them to eternal paradise in heaven anywaywhere they get to sit around and play a harp for Jesus forever and ever. The forces of Armageddon are amassing. God, Jesus, and the United States Marine Corps are waiting for the command to save the worldto bring hells fire down upon their ass.
But only a chosen few will hear the call and the rest of us need to be prepared to do whatever is required for the greater cause. Even to lay down our life if necessary. Without asking questions. It takes total faith for this thing to work.
Midlands Jesus gave up his communist lifestyle for democracy and the free-enterprise systemthe only really true and fair system in this world. And he gave up Aramaic for Englisha much better language with which to understand scriptures. But not just any English. Those who really want to understand the absolutely totally unadulterated words of Jesus know that they are to be found in one and only one version of the bibleThe King James version. And every word contained in that book was inspired by Godis in fact God speaking through the writer. Every word. Meanings get lost in the other versions, but old King Jameswellhe got it all right.
If you hang around the Midland church crowd long enough you might get confused into thinking Jesus also wrote the constitution of the United States. And the lessons of Jesus seem to apply only to those within our own borders. The rich of Midland learned long ago that there are limited resources in this world, and if we divide up everything equally, well, some of the luxuries Jesus people need and deserve just wont go around.
And because we are Gods chosen ones and so blessed, the rest of the world is jealous and hates us. They hate freedom too.
You see, us Texans around Midland have got this all figured out. Now, if the rest of the world would just listen and do what we tell them, everything would work out fine.
But yall dont worry. Ole Dubya prays constantly, telling Jesus exactly whats going on and what we need. And he knows things we dont.
You are just going to have to trust me on that one.
And if worse comes to worse he has a whole bunch of nucular missiles ready and waiting to defend our freedom. He goes nowhere without that briefcase needed to fire them babies.
Dont you feel safer already?
* * * * *
I was asked to write this piece on Midland, framed as the birthplace and home of our current president, George W. Bush. I will be the first to admit that I dislike Bush. Thats putting it mildly. So the above diatribe is not an entirely accurate picture of the city itself. Nor is Midland entirely to blame for Bush. He lived there only a very few years of his lifelong enough to pick up the accent, some of the mannerisms and prejudices of West Texasbut there are those of us who still swear wholeheartedly he is not a true Texan.
To be sure, both he and his dad quickly outgrew the pond that is Midland; it wasnt near large enough to contain their global aspirations. And not everybody who lives in Midland or was raised there is like bush.
Midland is not so different than many other small cities throughout Texas and the Southwest. The city was established to service the needs of a growing nationfirst a stopping place to get across the great desert that we now call West Texas, and then later to explore for and exploit the oil found under the ground there to fuel this nation.
Midland represents the conquest of one culturethe European white raceover that of othersthe Spanish, Indian, Mexican, and blacks that were imported as slaves. I know most of us, as Midlanders or Americans, will deny that factto say such a thing is politically incorrect. It just happens to be the truthat least in this day and time. But the struggle is ongoing, and the war is not over.
Ask any kid who has to attend a public school in Midland or Odessa. Racism and the struggle between the races is still very much alive.
Most of those who are part of that white race are not even aware that we have oppressed others. We simply did what we thought best for our own. Most of the time our intent was not malicious. But as is often the case in this world, what is good for one harms another. The implementation of white European lifestyle destroyed or severely altered the way of life of previous occupants of this country.
The people who settled the area had to be a hearty lotthe environment in which they built is hostile by anyones definition. The fact that they successfully created an oasis in such an environment is testament to their work ethic, ingenuity, and determination.
And as these white people established their community, I am sure they thought they were providing a better way of life for those of other races and cultures as well. Perhaps they were. But this is a question that will be up for debate and many answers will not come until the entire story is told.
White Americans believe in our system of government, the rules and laws that create order in our society, and the moral standards under which we live. And we think that other cultures would benefit by implementing these same standards and laws in their own countries and worlds. Not all our ways are bad. We stand in lines and wait our turn. We stop at red lights and let the other guy go until our light turns green. We do provide for the poor of our country. An education and many other services are offered to all who live here. We try to keep our communities clean and sanitary. Few do without food or clothing in this country.
There were those of us that thought we did a service even to the Africans we enslavedbringing them to this continent to share in a better way of lifethat being a slave here was preferable to being a free man and starving to death in Africa. The time came when we invited these people into our communities and gave them equal rights under the law.
American Indians lived very primitive lives. Many white men envisioned that these people could be assimilated peacefully into our cultureto provide a better way of life for them as well as us. But when some resisted our intrusion, we forced our ways upon them. And in the end we slaughtered entire tribes to get our way.
I now see what we are doing in Iraq and the Middle East in similar light. Those who wrote the Project for a New American Century manifesto, (PNAC), envisioned going into other parts of the world and teaching these cultures how to live like we do, under our care and guidance. They are determined that we should shoulder the burden of the rest of the world not only for our own good and protection, but also because they truly believe in the long run it would be best for these other cultures as well. (Cheney, Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, etc.) These people think it important that the United States of America should maintain and further its advantage over the rest of the world for as long as possible, for the good of all.
George W. Bush is one of them.
Unfortunately, many of the Arab worlds do not like our plan. Nor will those south of our border, those in Africa, or those in the Far East. Once again, we are killing people that resist our encroachment, and assimilating those who dont resist. So far, we have the bigger guns and the greater force.
But history has not been kind to cultures that try to force themselves upon the world. And this story is not over.
In the meantime there are about two hundred thousand souls out in West Texas who think Midland/Odessa is the best place in the world to live and raise their children. And theyre just doing the best they know how.

The great distraction
Submitted on January 15th, 2005 by Bill ConroyInteresting portrait of Midland/Odessa. But it seems in the second half of your piece you may have slipped into some of the same mindset you satirized in the first half of the commentary.
Last time I checked, there are a lot of people who go to bed hungry in this country, without adequate health care and without much concern about their plight from those of means -- who keep telling us everything will be OK out there if we just do as they say.
"White" people just trying to get by, huh?
As far as I can tell, this struggle were in isn't about "white" people vs. "colored people." That's a bullshit premise from which to draw any conclusion.
Hell, I'm from working-class Midwest Irish stock, and my ancestors immigrated to this country in the 1800s to survive the potato famine thrust on our lot by "white" conquerors from King James' neck of the woods.
I don't align myself with anyone because of the color of their skin, so I just can't buy into your colored notion of humanity's struggle.
Maybe you didn't mean to draw it out that way, and if I picked it up wrong, I apologize for making the wrong inference.
But I think it is crticial that we make the distinction between what is used to divide us and what really divides us. Racism is almost always used as a tool by one majority population to exploit its advantage over another minority population. That "white" person fears losing his land, so it must be the "brown" guy that is going to make that happen, so us "whites" have to stick together to protect our own -- and we are all just good people trying to do the best for ourselves afterall.
Meanwhile, who's the real culprit behind the scenes, trying to grab everyone's land and relishing in the fact that the poor white folks are duking it out with the poor brown folks -- the great distraction allowing them to succeed in their land grab?
There's an old saying among the Irish, my tribe if you will:
Yeah, greed, not skin color, is the true enemy. Racism is just one of the masks greed wares.
But I think this is a hard subject, one where words can be easily misread in the fire of emotion. Still, I make no apologies for my beliefs, nor accommodations for misperceptions that continue to foster injustice.
I do, however, believe that dialogue among reasonable people can lead to understanding.
Another Irish saying to that point, "It is a long road that has no turning."
Another piece related to race, from my diary

Tuesday, I went into a local Barbecue restaurant I frequent owned by a Mexican. It was mid-afternoon so the place was almost empty. Two black men sat eating. I asked the owner what he thought of the election--who he thought would win. From past conversations, he knew I voted for Kerry.
"Bush will steal the election," he answered quietly, after a quick look around.
Then I asked the two black men what they thought. One took at look at me.
Big white guy with boots and a cowboy hat. He lowered his gaze to the floor and said nothing.
His companion said, "Anybody but bush," probably expecting a confrontation. I admired his courage.
When I agreed, he looked surprised. The first guy looked up and confirmed that he too felt the same way.
Afterward, I began to wonder just how many Texas blacks and Hispanics voted for bush. Then, while watching the election, a startling figure crossed the screen. Over 90% of the vote in Washington DC went to John Kerry. Nearly the entire population of DC happens to be black.
I did some quick calculations. White people in Texas now form just under 50% of the population. Hispanics come in second in the mid-30% range and blacks make up less than 20% of the population.
Along the border, the majority of people are Hispanic (deep-south Texas and El Paso) and they vote Democrat. A very high percentage of blacks, regardless of where they live, also vote Democrat.
Bush got over 60% of the vote in Texas. Let's say for the sake of argument that 60% of the Hispanic vote went to Kerry (I don't have the exact figures here, but that won't miss it by much). That would mean they represent over half of Kerry's statewide total (somewhere in the vicinity of 21 out of the 38% he received). Black voters probably account for at least one quarter of Kerry's vote or an additional 10 out of the 38% total. Leaving whites with somewhere around 7 of that 38% total. (I can't help but wonder how many of them are homosexual. I am beginning to feel like a dinosaur. Married, white male heterosexual. I believe in God and the teachings of Jesus. Even wear a cowboy hat. And I voted for a Democrat.)
Around 90% of my kind voted for bush. And, by the way, are now very happy with the way things turned out while all the rest of you sit around crying. Should have seen the smiles on all the white faces at the Wal-Mart store last night (Another good ole southern institution from the neighboring state of Arkansas).
I don't think this phenomenon is limited to Texas. But then of course we've been busy exporting Texas politics to the rest of the land for some time now. Good old Tom Delay figured things out and along with the Roves of the world saw a way to disenfranchise as many minority voters as possible with shrewdly drawn lines on Congressional districts. The results: They put nearly all Democrats into one district and created four others where existing Democratic Representatives of the House got beaten. Four out of five ain't bad.
People in Texas say morals mean a lot to them. But what they mean is white morals. Blacks, Mexicans, and the rest are welcome as long as they adopt our values.
(Here's one more little tidbit from the state of Arizona. Proposition 200 passed overwhelmingly. This law in essence makes immigration cops out of everyone. What is it we fear? Hispanics may soon be a majority down here and they bring in culture changes that scare rich white folks that happen to like the way things are--thank you very much--and are doing what they can to ensure that things stay the way they are.)
Now you can be a black and be Republican, or a Mexican and be a Republican. But by God you will learn how to speak English and how to turn your brothers in for illegally entering this country in the case of Mexicans, or you ass is gone. It would help if you plant a lawn and keep the trash picked up. We really like you guys for border patrol agents--being as how you also speak Spanish. And as for blacks--it's the same old house-n.. field-n.. thing it has always been. One we like; one we don't. (I hate to admit it, but I include myself here: Here's examples of blacks we like: Colin Powell, Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Tiger Woods, David Robinson and Martin Luther King now that he's dead. And the ones we don't: Malcolm X, Mohamed Ali, Charles Barkley, Snoop Dog, Shaquille O'Neal, and Jesse Jackson [until he's dead]. At least I'm working on it.)
You'd think no one of a different race would take Republicans up on such an offer. But you'd be wrong. Because we have the jobs. Own the bank. And the prison for those that won't cooperate.
A recent trip to Balmorhea, the tiny town where I once lived with a very high percentage of Mexicans revealed the following: Everyone I knew from days of old was either dead, in the prison, or working at the prison, aside from one. He, too, was an employee of the government--with a contract to repair highways. Their kids sell dope and go to prison or are in Iraq. If not, they're headed that way.
On a larger scale, we really fear being controlled by Moslems and Arabs, who just happen to have most of the oil left in the world. Oh we have some oil: thick greasy shit, hard to extract from the ground and expensive to turn into gasoline. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that a large part of the world's wealth will be headed that direction in the next twenty years. In fact, Middle Easterners already own about 10% of our country. So we're over there kicking ass and taking names, staking our claim. Exporting Texas politics to the Middle East.
(Being a white boy, I wouldn't have much of a problem with that aside from one thing. It won't work. And the thought of killing innocent people--esspecially the kids--well, I'm not that far gone yet.)
Oh, we aren't prejudiced. We'll allow some of them to come over here, as long as they lose the head-rag, learn English, and how to act like decent white folk. Is that too much to ask? And those that take up our ways and look out for our interests--well, they can stay in their own country and be president or get a paying government job.
Spreading freedom and Democracy by God. That's all we're doing.
I kind of like the way we live around here and can't understand for the life of me why the rest of the world wouldn't want to live this way also.
That's how it appears to me, from the middle of Texas.
These views are mine and mine alone and do not necessarily represent the views of the Agonist. For the record, I am not affiliated with any political party.
Black Jesus is all right by me
Submitted on January 15th, 2005 by Bill ConroyWe may all have limited "portals," but I bet we both put our pants on one leg at a time and take a crap out the same portal. So are we really as different as you suggest -- regardless of our hues.
I suspect your diary entries are ruminations on the way you see things as "being," not necessarily comments on the way you want things to be. So take my ruminations on your ruminations in that vein.
I'm certain, given the limited "portals" we all look out of -- including your diary -- you would agree that the view you have is likely obstructed. Now, like a horse with blinders, you'll be fine if you stay on the road you're on, but where will that take you?
Take off the blinders, and you may see the portal is of your own making.
One other thing, as you put it:
Who is this "we" you speak of. I've never met Mr. or Mrs. We, so point him or her out for me, so I can make a proper introduction.
As for myself, I actually voted for Jesse once; like some of Snoop's hip hop, particularly his early stuff with Tupac Shakur; enjoy Barkley's wit (though suspect he is a Republican); believe Ali raised the spirits of the world; and was inspired by the courage of Malcolm X. (He had balls and died for his convictions; who among our elected leaders today would be willing to do that? Additionally, my wife made up a Christmas poster this year with his picture on it, and the words, "Merry X-mas." I rather liked the sentiment, but then I can be a bit of a scrooge around the height of the shopping season. I'm not on the same page with everything Malcom professed, but he was right about a lot of things, including these words from his mouth: "You're not supposed to be so blind with patriotism that you can't face reality. Wrong is wrong no matter who does it or who says it."
But like you said, we all have different backgrounds, so our tastes may differ. But does that mean I'm really not white-skinned? Actually, come to think of it, I am more of a pasty malt color with a tinge of red and streaks of blue where the veins show. And I've got blue eyes, so am I different from white people with brown eyes? My children are part African, Irish, Cherokee with a wee bit of German. Are they white, black, indigenous? I guess, mostly.
Which part of "we" do they belong to based on the way the sun refracts off their hides?
Yeah, that portal thing can be pretty limiting if you don't get a hammer and break out that concave glass, so you can stick your neck out once in a while to see the sunshine.
With that said, we don't have to agree, I agree.

I sometimes take on a personna other than myself
Submitted on January 16th, 2005 by Don Henry Ford Jr.I do not consider myself overly racist. In fact, I really appeciate the differences in culture that make this country what it is. But I think in Midland I am a tiny minority.
I have sat in the offices of the rich oil men, the tall glass castles, and heard the talk when no minority was around and all the women become bitches and whores and the blacks become niggers. The same crowd from which bush comes. They'll deny this to the grave, but I know better.
And I have also sat amone the blue collar oil field workers and heard the same. This is the world from which I come. I grew up with race riots, and KKK trying to recruit me. Perhaps you missed out on this. Perhaps I am lost in the past. But when I talk to my kids they tell me the same crap is still happening.
Not all whites are this way. Obviously you are not and you are to be commended for that.
And the part of Texas where you live, South Texas is considerably different. Midland is an anomoly--most of West Texas is not like that. But Midland is and the rich parts of Houston and Dallas are.
Or so it appears to me.
I just finished Howard Zinn's A people's history of the Untied States. If it's any consolation, this race thing is not limited to the US.
Fifteen million indians occupied this land when the first white man showed up. By the time we had taken over the continent, only 200,000 remained. Colombus was responsible for the death of millions on hispanola and a slave trader. In Uruguay there are no indeginous people left--they all were killed. Central and South America have similar history and it continues until today.
We have made strides but the battle continues.
Slaying the Hydra
Submitted on January 16th, 2005 by Bill ConroyI figured as much. And I've been in Texas long enough to see the world you speak of, even here in South Texas.
I'll give you an example. Just yesterday, I was traveling out of town with my kids. Along the way, we spotted an advertisement for a diner: Karen's Kountry Kitchen.
My 14 year old was taken aback by that. He remarked that it seemed like a subtle billboard for the KKK. Whether it is or not, I don't know, but it is an indication of how sensitized my 14-year-old is to the realities of racism in his world, which is South Texas for the most part.
I also get solicited with racist literature on occassion, active cells of the KKK in the Hill Country.
Oh, yeah, and I've run across the country-club racists here too, the private white-only plantation affairs where the only people of color are taking coats, opening doors or serving food.
And I've heard the talk, the wink and nod that I'm in on the joke, that we don't want "these people" getting too upity -- of course, assuming I am part of their conspiracy.
And I see how this racist politics plays out in this city I live in, how politicians of color who seem to be getting too much power often find themselves indicted for "criminal acts." Not that all of them are innocent, but it sure seems strange that all the "white" politicians here are so "clean." In fact, I can't recall a single white politician being indicted here in the past 10 years, yet there have been at least a half dozen African American and Hispanic political leaders who have been tarred and feathered with charges over the past few years alone.
Oh, it's alive and well, even in South Texas, but like you said, and accurately described, try as you might, you can't seem to break through the ignorance because the denial runs deep -- and the people in power have a big backyard to protect.
I for one think the whole red-state phenomena is built on this stuff, a new form of Jim Crow, a seething, stealthy racism that is raising its ugly head thinking the Civil Rights movement is now history. It's like a Hydra, as soon as you cut off one of its heads, another grows back to replace it.
But it must be resisted; you do agree? And how did Hercules kill the Hydra? It was with an arrow dipped in the blood of the beast itself. So we have to at least try to wound this monster, and leave it to our best archers to put the beast out of its misery.
I do agree
Submitted on January 16th, 2005 by Don Henry Ford Jr.Here is a site related to race and prison statistics I find disturbing.
And a few excerpts:
Of the 246,100 state prison inmates serving time for drug offenses in 2001, 139,700 (56.7%) were black, 47,000 (19%) were Hispanic, and 57,300 (23.2%) were white.
"When total incarceration rates are estimated separately by age group, black males in their twenties and thirties are found to have high rates relative to other groups. Among the more than 2 million offenders incarcerated on June 30, 2002, an estimated 596,400 were black males between ages 20 and 39 (table 13).
"Among males age 25 to 29, 12.9% of blacks were in prison or jail, compared to 4.3% of Hispanics and about 1.6% of whites (table 14).
"Although incarceration rates drop with age, the percentage of black males age 45 to 54 in prison or jail in 2002 was an estimated 3.9% -- more than twice the highest rate (1.7%) among white males (age 30 to 34)."
According to the federal Household Survey, "most current illicit drug users are white. There were an estimated 9.9 million whites (72 percent of all users), 2.0 million blacks (15 percent), and 1.4 million Hispanics (10 percent) who were current illicit drug users in 1998." And yet, blacks constitute 36.8% of those arrested for drug violations, over 42% of those in federal prisons for drug violations. African-Americans comprise almost 58% of those in state prisons for drug felonies; Hispanics account for 20.7%.
One in three black men between the ages of 20 and 29 years old is under correctional supervision or control.
In 1986, before mandatory minimums for crack offenses became effective, the average federal drug offense sentence for blacks was 11% higher than for whites. Four years later following the implementation of harsher drug sentencing laws, the average federal drug offense sentence was 49% higher for blacks.
The last process in turning coca base to cocaine hydrochloride is adding hydrochoric acid. To make crack actually is a simple matter of reversing that process by adding baking soda and nuetralizing the acid. So crack and coca base are the same product.
Why blacks in the US prefer crack over cyrstalized cocaine, I don't know, but it is a fact. Federal guidelines call for multiplying crack by a factor of one hundred for sentencing purposes.
Perhaps the intent of this law had nothing to do with rascism, but in effect it has put a disproportionate number of young black men in prison for incredibly long amounts of time.
This is unfair and needs to be repealed.
It is my belief that God's children come from every language, nation, and tribe. I aspire to be one of them.
