Reporter's Notebook: Jeff Simpson

Autopsy

If you didn't watch Bill Moyers' surgical demolition of the media's performance in the run up to war in Iraq, you can still see it online.

I'm sorry I don't have time to do a thorough review, but here's a little taste of Moyers grilling Tim Russert about allowing Cheney to use his show as a propaganda outlet.

The administration had leaked a story about the infamous aluminum tubes to the New York Times, and then Cheney goes on Meet the Press
and uses the article to support his fearmongering.  Here's how Russert defends his utter lack of sceptical inqiry:

There were concerns expressed by other government officials. And to this day, I wish my phone had rung, or I had access to them.

Poor Tim.  All that money and prestige, and he's still just sitting by the phone, waiting for the call.

Excellent Review

Here's the review I wish I'd written.

O'Really

And now, to top it off, Bill O'Reilly in his euphemistically titled "No-Spin Zone" program has attempted -- and failed -- to lambast and discredit Moyers.

On Thursday night, O'Reilly made his usual smirks and took his typical "Here come the liberals!" swipes, but in the end he failed to state his case with any credibility. He accused Moyers of failing to portray a "balanced view" of the media following 9/11 -- as if balance could have or should have been a part of the Moyers expose on mainstream media laziness, complacence, and obeisance in the shadow of the Bush Administration!

Surprisingly, one of the commentators O'Reilly featured in his attack on Moyers had laughed in O'Reilly's face. She clearly couldn't take O'Reilly seriously, and even said to him, in subtance, "This isn't just about you, Bill. You were a very small part of the program."

Great Clip

What a piece of work.
