JBG in Oventik requests support for Pikote

The Good Government Junta (JBG) Central Heart of the Zapatistas in front of the World, based at the Caracol of Oventik in the highlands of Chiapas sent out a request, at the end of April, for assistance from independent organisations, solidarity groups and Zapatista sympathisers for three women, EZLN bases of support, from the community of Pikote in the official municipality of Citala, who were victims of a serious fire on 18th April 2011.

The houses of the three women were totally destroyed by fire in the middle of the night, the Junta reports. One of the houses served as the autonomous health centre, and medicines and vaccination equipment were also lost in the fire. The second building served as a kitchen, while the third was a small grocery store. This was the sole means of support for the three companeras who lived alone "and were looking for a means to survive and move forward in the Zapatista struggle". The buildings were constructed of wood, and "none of their possessions were saved, the women barely escaping with their lives".

The JBG list a detailed valuation of the items lost, mainly goods from the shop, amounting to 580,502.50 pesos (in the region of £30,000).

These buildings, they say, were community centres, and they are calling for help and support in rebuilding them. "We, the junta, are not able to support them financially or materially, by reason of lack of economic resources, because we are autonomous and in resistance. We do not rely on the bad government". They are therefore approaching civil society "to see if you have the ability and willingness to support us with money or materials".

"We, the Zapatistas, know that in our state and our country there are sincere and honest people who understand the just cause of our struggle and who are willing to support us" ...... "Although we encounter many obstacles, we will move forward in our struggle and the construction of our autonomy."

Any organizations able to offer any support should go to the offices of the JBG in Oventik.
