Letters were delivered to Mexican embassies and consulates throughout the world yesterday (24 Sept 2012) in support of an indigenous Tzotzil teacher and prisoner of conscience, Alberto Patishtán Gómez, from Chiapas, Mexico. He has now been imprisoned for twelve years for a crime it has been proven he could not have committed, but numerous appeals have been turned down or ignored, and the many national and international organisations involved in his defence believe this is their final hope for his release.
Below is a summary of the latest news from Comandante Abel community
It should be remembered that these types of attacks are happening, have happened before, and are likely to happen again throughout Zapatista territory.
All people of good conscience are asked not only to remain alert and aware and be ready to respond when aggressions happen, but also to be proactive and take preventive action to prevent any more such occurrences. We cannot remain silent.
Alberto Patishtán loses his sight due to neglect by the Mexican State
This Human Rights Centre expresses its outrage at the inadequate performance of the Mexican state in providing medical care to the political prisoner Alberto Patishtán Gomez (hereinafter Patishtán), who for several years has been reporting his poor state of health, and the lack of interest of the Mexican State in treating him, which has resulted in Patishtán gradually losing his eyesight.

Ciudad Juarez earned the reputation as the most dangerous city in the world as its murder rate ramped up exponentially between 2008 and 2011, with some 10,000 murders attributed to a “cartel” turf war being waged in the Mexican border community of some 1.2 million just south of El Paso, Texas.

Usually, when I see a reference to drug wars, the word failure appears in the narrative. That would imply that the idea of the war on drugs is to stop the production and useage of illegal drugs.
Not so, says this man.
excerpt:
LS: You are arguing in your book that the war on drugs is no failure at all, but a success. How do you come to that conclusion?
