Update: Baja Ferries Backs Down?

According to this morning's La Jornada, Baja Ferries CEO Juan Medina Plata yesterday softened his tone, now saying that Zapatista Subcomandante Marcos may board the boat to Baja California Sur tonight from Sinaloa without taking off his ski-mask or presenting identification:

Delegado Zero will leave at midnight from the port of Topolobampo, Sinaloa, toward Pichilingue, in the municipality of La Paz, Baja California Sur, for which he will have to identify himself with a first and last name at the moment of presenting his ticket for the boat named The California Star. He won't have to reveal his identity, because in general identification credentials are not required to board.

That is what Juan Plata Medinal, spokesman for Baja Ferries, said, explaining that Subcomandante Marcos will be able to travel with his ski-mask on and transit freely like any other passenger.

The business cannot sell a ticket to someone who uses the pseudonym of Subcomandnte Marcos, but last week a packet of 40 tickets were sold to an EZLN delegation and any of those names could be him, he said.

He mentioned that what is not prohibited is permitted, and in this sense there is nothing to impede that Marcos travels on the boat, where he can remain on board with or without his ski-mask with the guarantee that nobody will bother him.

What happened? President Vicente Fox is scheduled to be in the same port of Topolobampo this afternoon at 5:30 to cut the ribbons on some development projects. Once the story hit that a problem was brewing right there, the boys upstairs got nervous and apparently decided to back down.

Another victory for the Zapatista Other Campaign. Things of this land...
