APPO rejects ultimatum, digs in heels

The Mexican daily El Universal reports that after hundreds of officers of the Federal Preventive Police (PFP, the same force largely responsible for the Atenco massacre in May) arrived this afternoon via airplane and stationed themselves outside the city, the Mexican Department of the Interior issued an ultimatum to the movement. The ultimatum demanded that the APPO leave the streets, end its occupation of the downtown area and government buildings and take down all its barricades.

The APPO has rejected the ultimatum, declaring it will continue its protests and barricades until its principal demand is met: the removal of Governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz. The movement’s leaders put out a call to reinforce the hundreds of barricades around the city.

APPO: Maintain Barricades, Avoid Clashes

A spokesman for the APPO has been explaining on Radio APPO the movement leaders’ position on what they seem to see as the likely entrance of the Federal Preventive Police tonight. “Stay at the barricades until the last moment,” said the APPO representative, whose name I was not able to catch. “But do not confront them. This is not about resisting (armed police). We are going to maintain our dignity, and stay at our posts as long as we can, peacefully.” The safety of the people at the barricades is the most important thing, he said, and the idea is not “to keep the barricades up at any cost.”
