Introducing the Authentic 31
By Al Giordano
Pictures that will tell more than a thousand words...

Here they are: the Narco News School of Authentic Journalism class of 2010.
Read more about them, where they come from, where they're going, what they do, and what they'll be doing together in February on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, here.
Update: Today we publish the first in a series of letters from these scholarship recipients, through which you can learn a little bit more about them and receive yet another invitation to support their attendance at the School. Today's letter is from Ansel Herz, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. (In the photo collage of the students I sometimes affectionately refer to as "X-Men," Ansel is the one, above, that most resembles Cyclops!)

Wonderful News, Redux
Submitted on November 16th, 2009 by Lorie CavinLook at the World...they are the future of journalism and true freedom of the press, globally.
I was one of the over 150 people who labored and delivered their applications to the Scholarship Commitee two days before the due date...48 hour deadline story. Congrats to Sebastian K. Aren't you glad you "just hit send"?
Dear Palo, I knew you would be there!
Katie Halper: I met you in New York @ the 9th Anneversary party. I am thrilled your wit will be part of the Sphere.
I reposted my comment from the Narco News announcement. Being a co-publisher, via my $$ and my comittment to Authentic Journalism and Organizing, is very important to me. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the future, while taking what I learn here at the Sphere, and bringing it home to my neighborhood, city, and nation.
Donate Now, in support of this real deal school. I gave $50 and increased my monthly donation by $5. Can you?
Earlier post:
Reading about the 2010 Scholarship Winners, I thought I was reading about the professors for the school. How exciting to be a part of such an amazing gathering! Congratulations!
I have been waiting all day for this...time to hit the donate button in honor of the Class of 2010 School of Authentic Journalism.
Funny thing, this authentic stuff. I wasn't selected and I still feel like I won.
Thanks, Al.
More $$
Submitted on November 16th, 2009 by Kathleen HarganThis is very exciting, and very timely as it coincided with the arrival of the charity campaign at my workplace. I already have a recurring donation set up through PayPal, but thought how clever it would feel to make an additional contribution through my staid and somewhat stuffy employer... so I will be making a small donation monthly through my employer to the School for Authentic Journalism. There seems to be some sort of poetic justice in that (if you knew who I worked for, you would understand...).
What a lovely group of
Submitted on November 16th, 2009 by Nancy ChesterWhat a lovely group of people. Their faces just shine. It is such an honor to be a part of this group. I just added a little more in addition to my monthly pledge. By my calculations with the matching funds we are now over $18,000. We're almost half way there.
Congratulations

What an amazing group of people!!!
Submitted on November 17th, 2009 by NLinStPaul (not verified)I'm a HUGE Nezua fan and so delighted to see him on the list!
For the last few years, I've sincerely believed that the condor of the southern hemisphere was rising to meet the eagle of the north. And from the looks of this group of folks, we're on our way!
Wow! What a fantastic group Al.

How Exciting

Whee! (part 2)
Submitted on November 17th, 2009 by Sebastian KolendoThank you, Lorie and everyone else :-) I am glad I "just hit send".
I'm enjoying reading the bios. My favorite so far is Oscar Estrada, and the phrase "riot porn". So true.
¡Bien hecho!
Submitted on November 18th, 2009 by Ken RileyNice work, Al! I'm impressed both with the quality of folks you've attracted and that you were able to raise the money to handle so many of them.
congrats to all of you

A little extra support
Submitted on November 19th, 2009 by Nancy ChesterI missed the update about Ansel's letter and the biographies until today and the opportunity to donate to specific participants to help with their travel, lodging and other expenses. Or if you can't decide, you can contribute to a general fund. I randomly picked 3 participants and sent them a little expenses money. I don't have the skills or talents to participate in any other way and this was fun. I feel like I have an investment in "my" 3 journalists & a connection to their 3 countries, however small it may be.
