America, 62262
By Al Giordano

Ray Rivera, Obama's uber-organizer in Colorado, will be back up on stage shortly, right after a performance by Will.i.am, and he'll be taking the Obama text-messaging organizing tool "to another level" with a gigantic visual aid. Here's some breaking news:
Here's a new way to stay connected with the campaign, text messaging. Last week we announced Joe Biden for vice president by text message. Tonight, we're taking it to another level.
Take your phones out now. Let's see them! If you look at the jumbo screen, you will see our interactive map that shows which states have the most people signed up for text messaging.
Let's find out which state can sign up the most supporters.
When you text "DNC" and your message of support to "OBAMA", or 62262, the star of your state will grow larger. Colorado has home-field advantage, so other states will have to work hard to catch up.
Let's do it. Text "DNC," plus your message of support for Barack Obama to 62262 now, and let's grow our map. Some of your messages will appear on the big screen, and we will send you occasional updates to let you know how you can help.
Let's light up the map and let's light a path for America's future!
Got it. Dial 62262 and text the letters D-N-C.
The Field recommends tuning in through C-Span or CNN.com (click the "uninterrupted" stream) or another live stream without chattering fools interrupting all the good stuff.

Update 5:34 p.m. Mountain Time: The huge light-bright terminal between the first and second levels of the stadium have the message: www.barackobama.com
5:35 p.m. Watching the crowd shots of the assembled on TV I look forward to contrasting them with those next week we'll be seeing from St. Paul!
6:22 p.m.: Sorry for the delays. The site crashed due to heavy traffic here today, but was fixed rapidly. Meanwhile, governors Tim Kaine and Bill Richardson just jumped all over McCain. But in the confusion over getting this site back up, I missed Richardson's brief Spanish-language part. Did anybody get that?
6:45 p.m.: Gore's up, at exactly the hour he was scheduled to appear. They're doing a good job at moving this thing along without falling behind.
7:06 p.m.: Donna Brazile, on CNN, mentions "50,000 house parties" across the country organized by the Obama campaign to view the convention today. That's five times the number floated earlier today.
7:09 p.m.: Michael McDonald's version of "America, the Beautiful" is a long way, and various decades away from, "China Grove," but he still retains a very strong voice!
7:15 p.m.: Susan Eisenhower - I previewed her remarks in the previous thread - is giving one of the best speeches of the week. Key word: "Temperament."
7:23 p.m.: Joe Biden appears on stage. (He wasn't on the schedule, but of course you knew he would!)
7:31 p.m.: Talk about media malpractice! The blabbering heads on CNN and MSNBC, et al, rather than letting you listen to the real people telling their stories on stage right now, are talking about nothing, blocking their voices out. They need a nice warm cup of you-know-what.
7:37 p.m.: With more than 80,000 in the house, Denver fire marshals have shut the doors to anyone else. Vendors and volunteers are being told to leave to make room for more.
7:42 p.m.: "We need a president who puts Barney Smith before Smith Barney." Home fucking run! Best line of the night. Barney! Barney!
7:43 p.m.: Look at all those American flags. And here's a nice catch from Plutonium Page at DKos:

...and that's just the Obama convention watch house parties in Ohio.
7:47 p.m.: Ray Rivera is back and announces that more than 30,000 have text messaged since his announcement an hour ago.

The Charmin Move
Submitted August 28, 2008 - 7:37 pm by Alexa (not verified)Sounbelievablyfuckingsmart. Think McCain's Campaign needs a four-foot cube of Charmin right about now?
Brilliant.
Submitted August 28, 2008 - 7:39 pm by David B. BrionesWatching it now live as they announce it to the crowd after the Will.i.am performance.

Submitted August 28, 2008 - 7:44 pm by kurt (not verified)i know that us fieldhands dont handwring over the pundits, but joe scarborough sp? just gave one of the most comprehensive analyses of what obama's doing that i've seen on corp. media. basically said that this is about backing up inspiration with actual organization -- learning from themistakes of dean and kerry -- and doing what bush did in 04 but even stronger. says that you're watching colorado go blue and much more.
weird.
Joe Scarborough
Submitted August 28, 2008 - 7:48 pm by Al GiordanoKurt - I saw that! I was shocked. "Morning Joe," as recently as this a.m., was continuing on his daily disparagement streak of all things Obama. But something about seeing this text messaging thing texted the memo right through his $400 haircut into his thick skull! Ha ha.
C-Span
Submitted August 28, 2008 - 7:48 pm by Suzy ShureC-SPAN is great online. I still plan to turn on the tv to watch PBS at 8pm EDT. Meanwhile, the MSM (Drudge, yuck!) is busy playing with the McSame VP announcement - it hasn't leaked yet, but they sure are trying to break into the news cycle. Bet they don't make a hoot of difference - considering the likely suspects named as potentials. Look forward to "Joey"( as his mom still calls him) making mince out of whoever it is.
Like Allan's husband - I am happy watching at home in the hills of Western MA - beautiful red sunset...
Funny thing about the stage
Submitted August 28, 2008 - 7:56 pm by Kat (not verified)I've had CSPAN on for about half an hour, and the stage didn't even register with me. I didn't even think to look about how it came across. With all of the people in the stadium and the flags on stage, it doesn't even make a blip.
Watching online
Submitted August 28, 2008 - 8:08 pm by Christi DemuthC-span keeps stopping for buffering. Hopefully it will fix itself soon. I just came back from swimming with sea turtles and now getting ready to go to host my party. 18 people signed up to attend in this little north shore Kauai, Hawaii town. Amazing! The campaign sent me a packet for hosting to my home address but it did not come before I left :( I don't even have a change poster to take a picture with.
Oh Well, who cares, I will ask everyone attending to register voters in their home state and make phone calls and canvass.
So very excited and happy!

The enjoyable power of ridicule
Submitted August 28, 2008 - 8:20 pm by gc (not verified)According to the Dallas Morning News, Democrats in Dayton, where McCain will be tomorrow, will "help" celebrate McCain's birthday with a cake blazing with 72 candles.

It's a great feed. You will have to download something but it takes just one or two minutes.
Richardson rocked!
I'm loving this night so far - I liked the past three days, some very good speeches, but it felt quite insidery.
But this - the movies, the clips, the music, the people who are speaking, I feel like THIS is the movement I know. It's terrific.

Thanks!

So I gave up all the BO watch parties I was invited to in order to watch with my Mom @ her house and with my Dad who on his good days is FIRED UP! Mom can't stop crying with excitement; my whole family all over the country--trading texts!!!
I just taught her how to text DNC to 62262...the first text she's ever sent from her cell!!

Props to Alinsky
Submitted August 28, 2008 - 8:51 pm by James HaygoodFrom Sullivan re: tonight's show in Denver:
"I'm watching the live feed on HD live-stream on my laptop. As the music plays, the cameras are panning through the crowd. Godammit but the Obama peeps have done it again. I get it now. As the regular folk get caught by the camera, you see them go nuts and wave their flags; you see black, white, yellow, young, old, men, women, gays, straights chatting and milling as they would at a concert or sports event. It normalizes an otherwise alienating political event. When you absorb the visuals, it doesn't come off like a political convention; it comes off as a mass gathering of ordinary people.
Somewhere, Saul Alinsky is grinning."
On the 72 candles
Submitted August 28, 2008 - 8:54 pm by Benjamin MelançonHillary Clinton's sex, Barack Obama's race, or John McCain's age should never be an issue in the campaign.
Approach to foreign policy, preserving constitutional rights, in favor or opposed to economic unfairness, whether someone is a power-hungry nutcase— those are issues. When, what color, or what parts someone is born with are not.
And Saul Alinsky would probably dismiss my moral arguments, but come to the same conclusion on simply pragmatic grounds. Compared to his obequious squandering of the the maverick reputation in the eight years since the Bush Rove machine race-baited him out of the primary, McCain's age is his strong suit.

And he's right by the way....all of those diverse Americans, waving flags.....next week is going to look STARK in comparison.

Oh, who am I kidding, they are sitting up on the second floor landing, sneaking a look at the convention, waiting for the speech. I think I will just forget to look up there and catch them....
holy crap
Submitted August 28, 2008 - 9:35 pm by kurt (not verified)this citizen speech thing is brilliant. politically it is doing the person like me thing... it is letting each constituency group hear from one of their own... it's testimony. it's ingenius (and systemic change organizing 101). hearing them rip mccain or defend obama is infinitely better than another pol.
and they are well selected, rehearsed and trained. hell half are better than the elected officials.
I love the ordinary people they have speaking
Submitted August 28, 2008 - 9:40 pm by Laura M. PoyneerThey're great and they really speak from the heart.
Barney Smith
Submitted August 28, 2008 - 9:43 pm by Okke OrnsteinWe need a president who puts Barney Smith before Smith Barney - now THAT's a great line.
Agree with Kurt. Regular People > politicians
Submitted August 28, 2008 - 9:44 pm by David B. BrionesAnother great move.
This convention has been a clinic on organizing, and it is at its pinnacle tonight! Print the textbooks so it can be studied!

MSNBC sucks
Submitted August 28, 2008 - 9:56 pm by Jess (not verified)And stupid as it is I feel sold out by Olbermann and company. I thought they at least had some ethics and sense of what journalists are supposed to do (seriously, at least a sense!).
My husband decided to see what the coverage of the citizen speeches was on MSNBC and of course there was Rachel Maddow blathering away over them. Pissed I worked through their site to find their 'contact us' email and fired off an email. I doubt anyone will read it, though maybe some poor intern gets stuck with the chore, but it felt good to tell them off.
Thank you for the great coverage here!
Wow! What a speech!
