The Field Projects: US President Barack Obama

By Al Giordano

Ohio has gone blue. New Mexico has gone blue. The Republicans now have no realistic path to 270 Electoral Votes.
Barack Obama is the next president of the United States of America.
You'll see more "red" states turn "blue" before the night is over, but this is already locked up.
¡Sí se pudo!
Celebrate or mourn in the comments section, while I queue up some really big news about the road from here.

Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Karen DesmondAnd thank you Al for your training! As soon as I heard Ohio I knew that was it, and was whooping around the living room. Meanwhile my husband's still staring at the TV screen saying, I'm waiting until that number says 270.

Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Toby Higbie (not verified)Just a reminder to any California voters that haven't voted yet: get out there and vote against Proposition 8.
Unreal - and very sick of Chuck Todd tonight
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by nepat (not verified)Over and over again, on this historic night, we need to hear that the only reason Obama won is the economy. It wasn't McCain's feeble reaction to the economic crash, it's simply "the economy." So frustrating.
To me, that was the first moment Obama appeared more presidential than McCain. And it was no accident of fate.
Shame on all these pundits who don't acknowledge that.
al. thanks.

A Change is Gonna Come
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Chris (not verified)Thanks from the UK!
Every American I've met in the past couple of years has felt the need to apologise for their President, and their country. One girl introduced herself by saying "Hi, I'm Casey, I'm from Texas, please don't judge me."
America is such a great idea, that has been tarnished so badly, that a lot of people will be relieved to be able to believe in the promise of it, if not the reality, once again.
Thank you from Hawaii!
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Pupukea (not verified)Thank you Mr. Giordano and Field Hands.
You guys are great. Good job!
Aloha from Hawaii.
I'm with your husband, Karen
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Kris JohnsonI'm saving my Champagne until I see the 270 on my tv screen, but I am elated! Awesome job, Field Hands.
As many others already have.
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Paul StollerI have to thank Al for providing this forum for us and for providing such great coverage of this process. Now the hard work begins. :)
CNN calls IA, where it all began, for Obama. Very Sweet.

Yes We Can
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Lloyd Webber (not verified)As Barack Obama said after that momentous night in Iowa: "They said this day would never come. They said we set our sights too high". This feels like the end of a long nightmare, and finally, the light is about to come back on

Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Jess (not verified)Outstanding work everyone!
Congratulations Al and everyone!
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Jeff LarsonYeah, I'll wait until 270 for the "official" celebration. But I'm whooping it up now too. We all did what we needed to do.
I'm also hoping to see more states turn blue just for a stronger electoral vote statement - like NC, IN and FL is looking pretty good for us now.
Congratulations to The Field
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Tom W. (not verified)What a year - you all deserve the heartiest possible congratulations. I've enjoyed riding along with the crowd here since last fall, sometimes in opposition, but always in pursuit of the same progressive goals. Well done, folks. Well led, Al.
Now to the Bastille?
In my heart I know it's over
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Anonymous (not verified)but I'm waiting to see the magical number of 270 on the tv screen before I faint...
CNN is getting ridiculous
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Ernest LeThey simply refuse to call the election. They just don't want to admit that it's over.
The most blatant shenanigans are when they show the electoral map with California, Oregon and Washington colored blue and yet Obama is listed as having only 207 electoral votes. No! Those states haven't been called yet, and when they go blue, Obama will be well over 270. It's over! Stop trolling for ratings!
...but then again, this is not a day for negative emotions. We did it! A brand new day has come!
so, so sweet
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Chris LandryAnd have you noticed that Obama talked recently, as he fired people up to keep working, about how power is never given up voluntarily by those in power? It feels amazing to me to have a president talking the language of the people.
CNN peddling popular votes with just some 40% votes counted.

I'm FREE....
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Ezzy (not verified)Yes.We.Did-just had a Rethug neighbor knock on my door and tell us we are celebrating too loudly. My husband, myself and our two young children are being told how much we can cheer by a bitter old man who's team lost. After being shocked, I ended up closing the door in his face because mind you, we listened to them cheer in both 2000 and 2004 and quietly took it. No.more. Change is here-if you aren't going to lend a hand then get out of the way. A new day has dawned in America and I'm just sooooo happy Barack and Al and all of you have been on this long journey with me. I'm so happy and I feel like my soul is flying free again. So totally unbelievable! I IMAGINED, I BELIEVED and finally, GOOD beat out EVIL! Here's to our planet, here's to our kids, here's to the America we know and love--here's to being on the right side of history!
Congrats!
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Okke OrnsteinCongratulations to all these people who worked so hard for this. The good guys won, and America is rehabilitating itself. I'm thrilled to see it all unfold, and Al, it has been a joy to read you here and watch you rediscover your country.

I am so overjoyed that you have chosen Barack Obama as your next President. You've turned a corner, now time for more hard work.
Thank you all for your hard work and time put in, you've done a great deal and changed the course of history. Well done! YES, YOU DID!
Oh what a night
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Cheryl, NJ (not verified)Hi all,
So many emotions, don't know where/how to start. So tonight I will just cry and celebrate. Won't think about organizing him, setting expectations - Tonight I'll just be happy.
Got the champagne all ready and when I see the 270, the cork gets popped.
I really knew it was over this past weekend as I called NC and PA today to GOTV. The excitement just sizzled through the phones.
Al and everyone else here, thanks for all the insightful comments and thankss for keeping me sane during this loooooonnnnnnnggggg campaign season.

NPR just called VIRGINIA for Obama!
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Susan Kitchensyesssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you suppose ABC has a budget problem?
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Jeff LarsonThey don't seem to be able to find many citizens outside of New York to interview. They keep showing Times Square and Rockefeller Plaza and other NYC locations. I just saw them in Times Square in an interview and the interviewer pointed to the big screen up above that showed them the crowds at Grant Park, Chicago.
It is too funny.

Life Under Obama
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Richard BellWhat great and amazing news!
Thanks for your work for the Field--it was good to have you back on the beat in the states.
Your missionary work to get people thinking about life under the Obama administration (don't you just love that little article "the"?) is bearing fruit. Here's a Kos diary from someone who heard you speak in Madison.
Fox has called VA...only one so far
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Tara Van NimanThe outstanding numbers are from NoVa so it does indeed look good. IN is going down to the wire. I'm not entirely clear on where the population centers are but there are still some Obama votes out there to be had (74% of Lake County in) and he is 5000 votes behind.
Ernest: no calling election until 8pm here on west coast, please
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by Susan KitchensBy the press, that is. I hope they keep it until we all have our polls closing, tho I but there'll be people in line still voting when polls close...
It's a foregone conclusion, but let us finish up here. :) Totally psyched. I hung out at the local trader joes (buying champers, CA-made of course, and tons of scuttlebutt there) talked to a local person in Monrovia, republican, congratulated us, totally gets that the R party needs to regroup, and (best of all!) he voted for Russ Warner for congress. Excellent. We may get David Dreier out. We just might!!
gratz to the field
Submitted on November 4th, 2008 by kurt (not verified)Gratz for calling the theme of the election back in september 07, and alerting everyone to the ground game that seems to have been the real firewall for Obama. I'm looking forward to celebrating with you all and then making the visions that drove this campaign a reality in the months to come. The time is ours!
