Fournier Conflict-of-Interest Campaign: Investigating Our APME Target Audience

By Al Giordano

If you're just getting to The Field after a day of relaxation canvassing and phone banking, please check our earlier post, The AP's Ron Fournier: Racial Arsonist and Unethical Journalist.

This post is Part II of developing the campaign to cause Fournier to be removed as chief of the Associated Press' presidential campaign coverage.

In a subsequent post we will document exactly how Ron Fournier has violated the AP Managing Editors Association's Statement of Ethical Principles ("ethics code"), and abused his post to inflame racial tensions in the United States based on knowing falsehoods.

We will also provide clear talking points for email, telephone and person-to-person contact with the 15 new governing board members, and twelve veteran board members leftover from the last three years, whom are ultimately responsible for Fournier's work.

Here, we also begin to outline the organizational steps we will take to make sure they hear and understand this information in the proper context: a full airing of the facts that will cause any ethical governing board member to clearly see the immediately necessity of terminating Mr. Fournier's services for the news agency.

Think this can't be done?

Think again.

It's been done before.

Our first step is to investigate our target audience.

Calling the following Field Hands locals and chapters:

ArizonaTennessee, Ohio, Northern California, Arkansas, New YorkMississippiAlabamaVirginia, Louisiana,IllinoisIowa, the Greater Philadelphia and also the South Central regions of Pennsylvania, Washington DC, and the great state of Washington!

Note that three of these regions - Arkansas, Louisiana and Ohio - don't yet have their own Field Hands group (although there are individual Field Hands from some of those places); as folks sign up for tasks in this investigative phase of our efforts, if you're from another place other than where our target audience works and resides, lend a hand wherever there's a vacuum.

And if you're not already signed up to the Field Hands organizing group, do it now, join a group in your area, and if you don't see one, start a local group. All those groups - some of them now with as many as 40 members - began with a single person. There are 531 Field Hands in all. Who will be #532?

We have 27 decision-maker targets here: the members and officers of the governing board of the Associated Press Managing Editors Association (APME).

Please use the comments section to sign yourself up for helping with the information gathering on each one.

We're looking for basic information, on each of these board members, his or her:

- Email address.

- Snail mail address (at their newspaper or business).

- Business telephone.

- Photograph.

And as this campaign grows we'll build public dossiers on each one with additional info:

- Information about their past stories or columns that indicate political ideologies or preferences.

- The candidates that their newspapers endorsed in the Democratic and Republican primaries this year.

- We'd like to know if they have Facebook, LinkedIn, Myspace or other social networking pages.

- Any other information that might be relevant to how they are likely to view information about conflicts of interest by AP reporter Ron Fournier and his incendiary use of the AP pulpit for race-baiting coverage of the presidential campaign.

The first group (15 of the 27 APME governing board members) are brand spanking new to the governing board. They were elected last weekend at the group's annual convention in Las Vegas.

Remember: this is the information gathering stage of our efforts. Do not contact these people yet. First, we want to know who they are, with as much specificity relevant to the matters at hand as possible.

Use the comments section here to:

A. Sign up to develop the public dossier (answering the questions above) on a specific APME board member (and make sure to put at what hour tonight or on Sunday you commit to posting the basic information (email, work address, work phone) here.

B. Sign up as a whip for your Field Hands local (committing to be the one to contact other members of a specific local and get them involved in the campaign once we have our Action Plan ready).

C. If you see any research stage task not being done, volunteer to do it!

D. Post information relevant to any APME board member and his or her newspaper's position on the presidential contest, ideology, and journalistic ethics, here.

E. If I've missed anything for the investigative stage of targeting our audience of 27 decision makers, use the comments section to suggest it here.

This is a big task at hand that we must do with lightning speed, accuracy and competence.

But many Field Hands make for lighter work.

Okay. Ready? Set? Go!

Update: If you have information on any of these 27 individuals that you're not sure is relevant, or might be too sensitive for public posting, send it to me via email at narconews@gmail.com .

Update II: Knock and the door shall be opened! Joey has just formed an Ohio Field Hands group.

Thanks Al!

I've been off the computer for 6 days due to massive power outages from last week's wind storms associated with Hurricane Ike - SO thankful you are all on top of this AP nonsense.  I'll be out canvassing tomorrow and will try passing this on to others, especially other family members here in Ohio with a little more time than I have just now. Once again, thanks, I was sputtering hot mad after reading this glop - please cross-post at DKos?  Many eyes and fingers can get busy quickly, and Kos himself is on a mission re: AP & Fournier, I believe.

It's feeling very close in OH, but it always will in my area (SW Ohio).  We are working it hard.  I'll need to read previous posts to find out when/where you'll be in Ohio...I'll happily buy you a cold beverage if you chance to come this way!

OT, report from the ground in NH

In a middle class neighborhood of Manchester, NH today, canvassed and found: 19 Obama, 19 McCain, 11 Undecided, 116 not home. Seems like an all out battlground, also between Shaheen (D) and Sununu (R) for Senate. Ran into 2 McCain canvassers who were dressed in very collegiate/corporate attire (and the female had Palin glasses). She said "to the fight!" Me and my partner were in jeans. It was weird. Our field organizer was unfazed. He said, "Oh, you ran into the only 2 canvassers in the state. They're doing that neighborhood, but we have offices in all parts of NH."

I've seen some enthusiasm regarding newspapers that endorsed Obama in the primaries. Well, most did - and also endorsed McCain on the Republican side.

Please when you check how a newspaper endorsed in one party's primary, check how it endorsed in the other one as well.

I can't find any relevant articles by him. He seems to be an administrator who occasionally writes about safe subjects.

Neither of his papers made any endorsements in the primaries. For what its worth, I read the Tennessean daily, and its primary coverage was heavily slanted in favor of Fred Thompson. It is a tradtionally Democratic newspaper and endorsed Kerry in 2004.

As for the Toledo Blade-I can only find one endorsement in the primaries and it was for Barack. I can't find an endorsement for a Republican? Hmmm-maybe someone else will find that link but according to Wikipedia, The Toledo Blade did not endorse a Republican.

Career summary: Executive editor of the Press & Sun-Bulletin since May 2005; managing editor of The News Journal in Wilmington, Del., The Indianapolis Star in Indiana and the Courier-Post in Cherry Hill, N.J.; news executive in the Newspaper Division at Gannett Co.; assistant to the managing editor at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution; business editor, day city editor, assistant metro editor at The Detroit News; assistant metro editor and metro editor at The News-Sentinel in Fort Wayne, Ind.; reporter at San Jose Mercury News.

Recent accomplishments: Directed newspaper and online coverage of a 100-year flood that hit our region and caused more than $175 million in damage in June 2006, providing enterprise reporting and helpful information so readers could better deal with the crisis; successfully led the newsroom and worked with other departments to launch a new $50 million press production facility that serves our newspaper in Binghamton and sister publications in nearby Elmira and Ithaca; provided what readers and officials described as the best Black History Month coverage ever at the newspaper in 2006; served on the Broome County Urban League Board of Directors and chaired the organization's Annual Meeting Committee; spoke to high school and college students about careers in the media.

APME activities: Served as chairman of the APME Diversity Committee; worked in 2006 to secure funding from the APME Foundation and the Freedom Forum for three scholarships that will be awarded to people of color to attend the 2006 conference in New Orleans and allow us to improve diversity in the organization; played a lead role in planning and developing for the Unity 2004 conference an APME Credibility Roundtable discussion, "New Views on the News. Young people of color talk about how journalism must change to win their trust"; served on the committee that selected winners of the Robert G. McGruder Awards for Diversity the past two years; worked with the vice-chair of the APME Diversity Committee to provide updates and valuable information for our publications and Web site, including an article on the need for and ways to include diversity in the growing area of niche publications, and on collecting and publishing on the Web and in print examples of outstanding diversity work.

APME should: Work more with media companies and Online organizations to decide how it can shift more of its focus on helping newsrooms continue to forge ahead in the digital age. Newsrooms of all sizes, especially smaller ones, need help to effectively remain strong as print products and watchdogs of government while adapting to demands for delivering information on the Web. APME should look at partnering with broadcast journalism organizations to decide how one can learn from the other different ways of providing information. APME also should continue to try to find ways to refocus newsroom leaders and other staffers on diversity so it is not forgotten as everyone deals with more and more challenges.

In my spare time: I spend time with my children, garden, mentor young journalists.

Here's some more on Michael Days

This link has lots of info like his hobbies, favorites (his favorite song is Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack.  Seriously?), and a bunch of other stuff.

http://www.namme.org/member/profiles/michael_days/

Here's an excerpt:

Amid newsroom cheers, Mike Days was recently appointed the managing editor of the Philadelphia Daily News after serving six years as deputy managing editor. A Philadelphia native, he will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the newsroom. According to the Daily News article announcing the promotion, Days, who is also considered the informal peacemaker in the newsroom, said, "I've been waiting all my life for this job."

It is not surprising that Days is a master of keeping the peace among reporters; he and his wife Angela Dodson, have raised four sons, now ages 17 - 22. Days finds that the most challenging aspect of the newspaper business is knowing that you're not doing your job if you are not making life better for readers every day.   He loves working for a newspaper that strives to make that every day difference. "We're currently waging war on the "johns" who patronize neighborhood prostitutes on the streets of Philly. We're putting their names and pictures in the papers."

Days, who started as a reporter at the paper 18 years ago, acknowledges that his best professional moment occurred when the newsroom staff broke out in cheers and toasted him with champagne when the appointment was announced. Days' editor, Zack Stalberg told Daily News reporter Scott Flander, "[Mike's] not a hot dog. He's not an emotional guy. He's extremely centered. He's the kind of person you'd like to have as a best friend."

amk - Whether or not I am going to do a post on something else, this is an organizing thread: real work is getting done here (and done very well and very fast, thanks everyone). Let's not detour it into a discussion of anything else.

Apparently, Ms Tarrant recently argued in favor of anonymous posting to online newspaper forums as a vital part of "true freedom of the press". Not sure that's relevant, but it is somewhat heartening to see someone within the establishment arguing in favor of the wild and wooly online community.

Updated Dossier Document

I think I've got everything in except for the pictures. I am able to copy and paste them, I just haven't gotten around to getting it formatted yet, but I figured the hard info. was the most important to include first.

If I missed anyone's post, I apologize, I've just been trying to move down the line and putting them all in the right place, but it's very possible I mistyped something, placed something in the wrong place or missed some good information.

Here's the link to the document, let me know if you can't access it or it's not looking updated: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcxkg97w_1x6hnnm55

As you can see from the document, there is a bit more information that we still need to get, but we've completed this very fast!

Re: Carole Tarrant

Here's an editorial appearing in The Roanoke Times, 20 Mar 2008: "Obama's race and racism". Thought specifically addressing how Obama handled the Jeremiah Wright affair, it does seem to take a clear stance against racial devisiveness.

Bailey

Career summary: I worked at daily newspapers in Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas; 15 years at the Democrat-Gazette, nine as managing editor. I taught editing and advanced reporting as an adjunct professor at LSU for eight years.

Recent accomplishments: I initiated APME endorsement of national shield legislation. We hosted regional Congressional Earmarks training and NewsTrain programs. In concert with other national journalism organizations, I monitored congressional legislation on First Amendment issues. I organized Arkansas newspaper editors and set up a communications network for successful united resistance to attempts by high school, NCAA and professional sports organizations to limit press access to events and to limit newspapers' copyrights.

APME activities: First Amendment Committee chairman; past participation on First Amendment, Storytelling and Wire Watch committees. Arkansas APME president.

APME should: Ensure that it can thrive through trying times for our industry; champion free press, free speech and government accountability; help develop the next generation of journalists.

In my spare time: I play guitar in a garage band – actually in a garage – and think about what it would be like to have time for golf again. I lobby for the Arkansas FOI Coalition against legislation that would weaken the Arkansas FOI or shield laws, which are among the strongest in the country.

No! NOT including others

Gettysgirl - Why is it that whenever a serious efforts begins to make an example out of one powerful media simulator, some folks want to expand and dilute the campaign to to include the other ones too?

Think! Dilute your efforts, and lose on all fronts. Those of us with less resources but better strategy must focus all our firepower at the weakest link (which in the case of Fournier, happens to be the boss and the one that assigns all those other wannabe clones to work according to his dictates).

I marvel every day at the lack of strategic or tactical thinking by people of conscience who need to do and be better at winning battles and not just complaining about how bad things are.

Just about all required information is now done!

Looking through at what I have...

The big glaring holes I have is:

Adell Crowe's mailing address and phone number (on her web site it lists only e-mail for contact due to 'occasional deleted messages'

Jan Tourney contact info (mailing address, e-mail address and phone #)

I'm not, at first glance, seeing anything else that is required for Al's criteria (besides the photos - sorry, I've been slow about getting those in and will probably get to it tonight or tomorrow, but I figured for getting in touch the photo is a lesser priority).

You should be able to print from the Google Docs web site, but again if anyone needs a hard copy (Al, would you like one that you can edit?).

If there's any typos, errors, discrepencies - please let me know. I've been rushing to get things copied and pasted over and I definitely could have overlooked something.

Besides those things I mentioned, the only thing we really need is some more info. on a few of the people (the ones popping out to me are the ones from Arizona, but I know there are a few others that are lacking info.)

Good work Field Hands!

Joseph Garcia

Community Conversation Editor

The Arizona Republic
Phoenix, Ariz.

Career summary: As Community Conversation Editor, I am in charge of the Sunday Viewpoints op-ed section, aztalk.azcentral.com, local columnists and Web manager; also write a weekly column, am a voice on the Editorial Board and seek to expand community conversation throughout The Arizona Republic.

Previously, I was a Senior Editor at The Republic in charge of three community newspapers in the Southeast Valley. Previous positions include: Editor, The Daily Times, Farmington, N.M.; Senior Editor, Assistant Managing Editor, City Editor and Columnist while at the Tucson Citizen, Tucson, Ariz., for 18 years; Staff Writer at The Associated Press, Denver, Colo.; summer stint at USA Today; adjunct professor of journalism at the University of Arizona, Tucson.

Recent accomplishments: Launched a Web site for community conversation, aztalk.azcentral.com; took part in a major news operation reorganization responding to the need for a greater Web presence for younger audience while simultaneously providing enhanced and targeted content to Boomer print audience; hosted a Diversity Roundtable for the Western Region; won a First Place award for Editorials (New Mexico).

APME activities: I am completing a one-year term on the APME national board and am running for a three-year term. Moderator/organizer of 2006 APME/Unity Diversity Regional Roundtable, hosted by The Arizona Republic in Phoenix; 2007 APME Mall of Ideas organizer; marketing committee; previously president and member of Arizona APME; helped in initial organization of APME Conference in Phoenix; organized sponsorship for reception at APME Conference in Phoenix to recognize Don Bolles, the Republic investigative reporter assassinated in a car bombing in 1976; helped in bringing APME NewsTrain to New Mexico for vital regional training.

APME should: Become a year-round resource for editors seeking to network and communicate with other editors (both experienced and new), who seek additional training, insight and understanding of the quickly changing responsibility, expectation and duty of newspaper and Web publication. The APME Web site should be expanded and become more interactive, allowing greater participation and access to newspapers. Content should be both general and customized for large, medium and smaller newspapers. Meanwhile, APME training efforts should be stepped up, as the industry scales back on training. APME also should take a more vocal and active leadership role on diversity, First Amendment issues and challenges to a free press and freedom of information.

In my spare time: Family, fishing, camping, travel, movies and music. In general, I continue to seek moments of Zen and sanity since craziness seems to find me on a daily basis.

Randy Lovely

Randy Lovely Editor and Vice President / News The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com Phoenix, Ariz. LovelyCareer summary: I was named editor of The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com in February. I joined the paper in 2002 as managing editor and was promoted to executive editor in 2005. Gannett awarded The Republic its first Gold Medal for performance by a newspaper in 2004. It also received the honor in 2005 and 2006, and was named Newspaper of the Year in 2005. Before coming to Phoenix, I was executive editor of The Desert Sun in Palm Springs. While in Palm Springs, I was awarded a Gannett President's Ring and the newspaper was a runner-up for Most Improved Newspaper. I began my career in 1986 as a reporter at the Sturgis Journal in Sturgis, Mich., when Gannett owned it. I worked at two Knight-Ridder newspapers in Indiana and California before returning to Gannett in 1992 as an assistant managing editor at the News-Press in Fort Myers, Fla. In 1997, I was named managing editor of the Shreveport Times in Louisiana. The Times was a runner-up for Most Improved Newspaper in 1998. I graduated from Central Michigan University. Recent accomplishments: My promotion in February exceeded all expectations and dreams that I have ever had. I was named one of eight Gannett Managers of the Year for my work in 2007. The Republic recently received market research that showed that the newspaper has grown readership and reach – an amazing accomplishment in this day. Also, azcentral.com continues to grow audience and is among the most visited news sites in the country. APME activities: I participated in a panel discussion during the 2007 conference on "print innovations in a digital world" and I am currently working with the APME Foundation to ensure that the convention auction this year raises a lot of money – hint to bidders to open their wallets! The Republic hosted the national convention in 2003. APME should: I think APME does an incredible job of providing support and guidance to our editors during a time of incredible uncertainty in our industry. I think the organization needs to continue to promote the balance between the values of our traditional print publications while pushing us to innovate in the digital world. Our success depends on achieving progress in both arenas. I would also like to see APME join with other industry organizations to develop a marketing message that focuses on our successes – and there are many – to counter the continuing onslaught of negative opinions about our profession. In my spare time: I love to dig in the dirt with my never-ending home landscaping project, sip a glass of good California wine, and enjoy a laugh or two with friends.

More Martin Reynolds, Oakland Tribune

From http://www.chipsquinn.org/news/chipsnews/chips_news.aspx?id=612

Chips Quinn Scholars: "Giving opportunity, training, and voice to young journalists of color."

"He also is working on an ongoing project with the Boalt Hall School of Law at UC-Berkeley, to look at alternative sentencing options for juveniles, new ways to use databases and the Internet for solution-oriented reporting, as well as the creation of a media access center for citizen journalism."

Forgot the other quote from the above link

for Martin Reynolds. May or may not be relevant, but gives a feel for where he's coming from:

"When Martin Reynolds was one of a team of Chips Quinn interns at The Oakland Tribune in 1995, the veteran Tribune police reporter Harry Harris, took the class on a bus tour of the city.

He started with the usual public places -- police stations, City Hall, etc. - and then he took them through 'the toughest part of town.' As the bus turned a corner onto 'one of the roughest streets around,' Martin pointed to a house in the mid-block and said: 'That’s where I live.'"

Photos should now be complete

Martin Reynolds, for later stage

I did quick lexis searches on Martin Reynolds + Oakland Tribune and Martin Reynolds + APME, and turned up about 100 hits, mainly press releases and news wires. Will comb through tomorrow and see if there's anything relevant for more background info.
