Live Blogging the McCain Speech
By Al Giordano
Okay, here goes. Help me blog this thing!
(And how did John McCain ever get the rights to use this song? That's just an un-American sacrilege! Must be a St. Louis Anheuser Busch thang.)
Update 9:07 p.m.: Another slide show. The two-dimensional nature of these GOP convention videos is so yesterday. Oh wait. It does have a few snippets of actual moving characters. But, like, any of those people ever hear of YouTube?
9:13 p.m.: "Barack Obama never had a daddy who would carpet bomb him." (And is that Fred Thompson's voice reading the "poem" at the end of the video? Okay. There he is. Poking around the stage to find the Braille teleprompter...
9:16 p.m.: This can't be happening. They're using the lime green jello background again! (Where is Katie Halper?)
9:32 p.m.: I've now read the entire speech, shrugged my shoulders, and said, "Al, you should watch it. Maybe the delivery is better than the text?" But it's not. This is a really B-list speech. I don't think it works with swing voters, not the suburban soccer moms nor the Nascar dads. It's really quite feeble. It's like he has something to prove and keeps falling back on his resume. "I fought for Indian tribes." What? I fight for this, I fight for that. Huh? I bet that Mark Halperin grades this speech B-. And it will hurt him to have to do so. But maybe McCain will rally in the brief "talk show" segment? Or is that even going to happen. He's barely halfway through his prepared remarks!
9:36 p.m.: I remember this convention. Both of them. It's 1980 and McCain is Jimmy Carter and Obama's speech was Ronald Reagan. Just sayin'.
9:45 p.m.: This is so happily terrible. "My friends, we'll drill them now, we'll drill them now!" Should be an interesting night in St. Paul as they haul in the big oil equipment and open up a hole in the city. Worst. Acceptance. Speech. Evah!
9:50 p.m. I can imagine Halperin, pen in hand, thinking "if I'm going to be honest this is going to be a C grade... Maybe I should give him a C+!" And Chuck Todd is thinking, "I better not grade this speech!"
9:52 p.m.: I'm just waiting for 9:56 to chant "Four more minutes! Four more minutes!" People really do watch these things thinking, "can I really listen to this guy for four years?" Jeebus. "I have my record and the scars to prove it. Senator Obama does not." And by that you mean, Senator? And? (Halperin is thinking that if he were a real journalist this would be a D grade.)
9:56 p.m.: Four more minutes! Four more minutes!
10:00 p.m.: Remember the term "catharsis" as applied to the Democratic convention? This is a "catharsis of one." Rare, when the losing team starts running out the clock. Never seen that before. Chicago must be ecstatic right about now.

* he'd stand for hours gazing at the... wait he carpet bombed his son?
* highlighting the military background of your family may not be a great idea in an age where people are tired of a pointless war.
* don't use the phrase, "in prison i fell in love..."
Anyway, the "war mongering" meme is getting big play here, and the dastardly music soundtrack is horrid. This whole thing screams "warlike" which doesn't help with the "temperment" meme...

Submitted September 4, 2008 - 10:40 pm by Kris JohnsonI firmly believe this comment, if it gets any play, will not play well at ALL with independent voters. My boyfriend, sitting at the other side of the room, who is traditionally a politically-apathetic rather independent sort of voter from Peoria, IL (bellweather anyone??) overheard the scene with the protester and McCain's comment that to ignore the ground noise and static, or something similar to that, and said "so he thinks that anyone who stands up and opposes him is ground noise and static???" My boyfriend is not someone who is sold on Obama, nor even sure he's going to cast a ballot, but if he does, it will definitely not be for McCain.

Ron Paul delegates silenced and intimidated at RNC
Submitted September 4, 2008 - 10:47 pm by Alexa (not verified)As I was coming home just now: A state Ron Paul delegate at the RNC called in to the local NPR station to report how the RNC was using private and convention security guards to follow them around the hall, the streets, and wherever they went. He said they were not allowed to vote last night. The security was really intimidating.
He and his fellow Paul delegates were assigned seats, each alone, on the floor in different rows. When they tried, on Tuesday, to sit together (everyone was sitting wherever they wanted to within the delegation), 30 security guards with guns descended upon them, someone called the RNC Chairman, and they were forced back into their seats.
The guy said that by the time of Palin’s speech last night, most of the Ron Paul delegates in the hall had decided to bug off, and they filled the seats with high school students, which they apparently did in general because they couldn’t fill the hall.
He also reported that there are scads of armed guards with high-powered rifles in the hall but hidden from TV view under the various rafters. The guy remarked, “Shotguns?!? Ordinary handguns I can understand. But not these high-powered rifles with vests and helmets.”

Two journalists on NPR said that he first time the term ‘maverick’ was ever used in connection with McCain was in 1998 with a bipartisan tobacco bill. The guy who really had the maverick term was a Republican from Oklahoma or Kansas who was also a John and whose name also started with Mc, I can’t remember it right now.

The speech doesn't build, and thus the applause doesn't carry it along. Instead, it punctuates it, exhausting the force of McCain's words and forcing him to start all over on the next sentence."

The Republican Party is doing with their take on the war in Iraq is spinning it in such a way that it’s about victory or defeat. But they can’t face up to the fact that you can’t win an occupation. In an occupation, everybody loses. What we’re calling for is an immediate withdrawal of all occupying forces in Iraq.

McCain's tribute to himself...
Submitted September 4, 2008 - 11:19 pm by Tribunus Plebis (not verified)Tonight John McCain delivered a speech about his own war heroism, other wars of the past, his passion to change Washington -- a city whose system he's served for 30 years -- and the need to stand up and fight as Americans, without specifying exactly who we should fight (though clearly he seems to be looking for a fight). If there was a single theme, it was his insistence that he had always served a cause greater than himself. And therein lies the glaring contradiction in this speech: McCain spoke constantly about himself, even as he insisted his service was not about himself. Down that strange hole of logic, most of the content of this speech disappeared. McCain offered himself up as a kind of avatar of selflessness, a kind of Mother Teresa of American Patriotism. How this relates to the decision that Americans have to make on November 4, he did not make clear. The speech was about himself. But this election isn't.

Really, this speech was wooden, amorphous, and lame.
I can't see this convention bumping McLame up over Obama.
Cindy McLame was especially weird--mixing her history as an American saint with partisan vitriol in a flash of a second. Acting as though she wants to help the starving children--and then showing up on stage with an outfit equal in value to a modest home in California or New Jersy. Insane.

I experience Halperin entirely through my RSS feed, and after every convention day there's always a post trumpeting the grades. Not tonight, no post on it. So then I thought, OK, let's go to his website ... nowhere to be seen. I had to click on the speeches for Wednesday's speeches, and only there did I see a link for the reaction to Thursday's speeches, and I only saw McCain's grade after seeing Ridge, Graham, and his wife. I swear I had to click ten times to see the damn grade.
I wonder why Mark doesn't want me to know he wussed out and refused to give an honest judgment of the speech.
Another way of putting this: good to know that in Mark Halperin's world, the gamut runs all the way from A+ to B+.

That's why I originally clicked the link, because I thought she was saying she was in it. Not that it really matters now that the confusion has been cleared up, but I thought you might want to know that you're not crazy.
