Passing the Hat

By Al Giordano

If you enjoy reading The Field and want this bl og to continue into 2009 to report on the United States in the aftermath and implementation phase of that mandate for change we've reported all year, please do toss a few coins into the cup as part of our final 2008 fund drive.

It's really easy to do (and you can deduct it from your 2008 taxes). Just click here and donate to The Fund for Authentic Journalism, or send a check to:

The Fund for Authentic Journalism

PO Box 241

Natick, MA 01760 USA

The fund supports my work and that of the journalists I hire and train throughout the hemisphere. To be able to continue blogging and reporting on all-things-US at The Field, I need to be able to hire another journalist or two for the Narco News side of this online newspaper (and here's a scoop: the journalist I want to sent to Bolivia to report that country's January 25 referendum for a new Constitution is an active Field Hand already known and loved by many of you. The quicker we meet our goal, the faster I'll be able to put her to work and let you know who it is.) So we've set a goal of $10,000 by the end of the year (yes, we work hard and for little) and the bar graph to chart the progress of this fund drive will be up momentarily.

And to spread the enthusiasm, if you donate or pledge to do so by the end of the year, please use the comments section here to let us - and each other - know how much.

The Field and everything we've accomplished in 2008 has been possible because of your support. And for as long as that continues, we'll be able to keep a good thing going.

We've been told that the reports from Latin America on Narco News are now required reading for the foreign policy pros entering or trying to enter the diplomatic corps and policy positions in the new administration. And we're entering a very challenging time to assure that the information available to them and to the American and global public is accurate and well reported. And let's face it: nobody else is keeping track of the check-list of campaign promises regarding this hemisphere - from renegotiating NAFTA to stopping the Colombia trade deal to easing the embargo on Cuba to immigration reform to meeting with previously US-shunned world leaders - to make sure they don't slip through the cracks.

Think of all the hours you've spent here, free of charge, and how we've sometimes calmed your nerves and other times excited them, and whether you'd miss it if we had to go away. And please be as generous as you can. That way when the ghost of administrations past tries to wreck your holidays you can know that you've helped assure that the antidote will still be available come the New Year!

And thanks for all your support, past, present and future...

- Al

Comments

I'm glad to support the efforts here regardless..

but can I ask if there's a way to contribute, and get around the comment modding queue?  I thought I remembered reading something a long while back...

(Also, "Just click here and donate to The Fund for Authentic Journalism" - seems to be missing the hyperlink?)

Yes, JS, It's True

Readers that have donated to the project and writers that have had a story published here can become "copublishers" giving you unmoderated commenting abilities on all our stories. There are 436 copublishers so far. All use their real names when commenting. The application is simple and it is here.

Dropped coins in the cup

Thanks for all you do, Al.  And thanks to all the commenters and fieldhands.

Wish it could be more

But here's $25.

Feliz Navidad, Al!

And Thank You for the excellent work.

None more deserving

of our support than the Field. The demands of the 9 -5 (and then the 6 - 10) don't leave a lot of time for commenting, but I am a forever faithful reader! In fact too long without the Field has me tweakin' a bit... Not only do I appreciate Al, but the comments section is in a class by itself. Field Hands rock! $100 from me Al, but it will have to be just before the end of the year, likely around the 26th.

one of the best political seminars on the web

Hi Al, I've enjoyed your unique insight and independent thinking since the Iowa primary. And the education I've received has been well worth my paltry contributions. So I'll mail another $100 but since I forgot about the tax deduction I will also send one third of my previous 2008 contributions. You may as well have the deduction money since I forgot about it anyway. (Please see my email.)

According to Karl Rove

Jeff's aggregate contributions adding up to more than $200 for the year make him a bona fide fat cat.

But I'll still edge him out for that Illinois Senate seat. I've bid something Blagojevich is really going to need as currency in his new home: cigarettes!

Here's $50 from Sacramento . . .

because "nobody else is keeping track of the check-list of campaign promises regarding this hemisphere".  I hope your travels bring you to CA some time.

Another donation

Al, Thanks for all you do. I just sent another $25 from me.

Another means of support

I encourage everyone to visit the new "Open for Questions" page at change.gov and search for questions on Latin America, the War on Drugs, and related subjects (and vote them up):

http://change.gov/page/content/openforquestions

This is one more way to help keep the work that's done at this site in the public consciousness.

$$$

Hi Al!

Glad to contribute! Wouldn't have made it through this election year without you! No, really!!!! You kept me sane AND gave me a great education!

Please send another reminder in a week or so; I'll know how much I can pledge on a monthly basis by then!

Would you believe.. 437 copublishers?

Add $50 from Chicago for journalism we can believe in.

Cheers, Al!

Off topic (time for another dose of anti-Chicken Little serum?)

Al:

I've noticed some blogosphere Chicken-Littling on two topics: 1) the Blagojeivch mess will damage Obama, and 2) Sen. Specter's call for a delay in Eric Holder's confirmation hearings will damage Obama. Will you be weighing in on either of these?

Keep up the good work!

Completely OT . . . It's Snowing in Houston!

Winter white everywhere!  Yesterday morning I wore a pair of shorts and a tee shirt to wash the car.  It's was just that warm.  Day before yesterday, I opened the windows because it was so warm and humid.  Tonight . . . my neighbors are throwing snowballs.  This happens about every 30 years.  Nice.

I'm not a Field Hand and don't feel confident or skilled in hands on participation in actions such as the mortgage foreclosures, but I can pitch in financially now and then. Your teachings have been priceless.  It's a joy to be a small part of this lovely group.

$50 from the Land of Lincoln

Would contribute more, but I'm saving my money for that Senate seat. He! He!  Seriously, the Field is my first read every day and no other blog has such informative comments.

$50 from Cambridge, MA

Thanks for all that you do, Al.  I've been a resident lurker since January.

$25 on dec 17

Al, look for $25 from me after I get paid on Dec 17.

$100 from Folsom, CA

Wish it could be more, but unemployment is running out.  Still, you're a better investment than the stock market, Al!

I could only give $15 this

I could only give $15 this time. Oregon Food Bank, Democracy Now and Friends Service Committee asked first.

There's no such thing as a small gift

Just small donors.

I was embarrassed to report my nine-dollar donation, but then I got to thinking that if every Fieldhand and a mere two hundred regular lurkers contributed nine dollars each, we'd reach our goal!

Al, thank you, your team, and fellow readers for your ongoing contribution to my mental and emotional health.

You can expect $9 from me every month in 2009.

In For

$30. Sorry it can't be more, Al. Things are tight this winter. Here's to Organizing the President, though.

feliz navidad

Hi Al,

I'm in for $20 this week when I get paid. Thank you for a wonderful election season and for creating this community of intelligent, diverse, and comforting voices.

Ad Astra.

$25 via Paypal

for the Christmas Pony and great blogging.

Thanks Al!
